Following the attack that hit the Syro-Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Salvation, committed last Sunday by an Al-Qaeda armed group, in which 58 people were killed and many were injured, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in a release published today, “joins its voice to that of Benedict XVI, of the Christian and Muslim religious authorities of the Holy Land and all the people of good will, who, in Israel, Palestine and Jordan, firmly condemn the violent deeds that led to the massacre of many devotees of the Syro-Catholic community of Baghdad, who were attending Sunday Mass”. “These terrorists – the text states – are not the real face of Islam with which we have been living for centuries. We appeal again to the message of the Synod for the Middle East and insist on the urgent need to continue an inter-religious dialogue that is capable of leading us, with God’s help, to a culture of life which prevents mankind falling into new religious and cultural fights”. Expressing “sympathy with the Iraqi population, the Syro-Catholic Patriarch, mgr. Ignace Joseph III Younan, with all the Syro-Catholic community of Iraq and Jerusalem”, the Patriarchate says it is “close to the victims and their families in its prayers. May the Lord give security and fraternity to the Iraqi population”.
