As announced by Baghdadhope this morning, a peaceful demonstration took place in the district of Karrada in Baghdad gathering Christians and Muslims representatives in defense of the rights of Iraqi minorities, in danger after the cancellation by the law governing the forthcoming elections of provincial councils of the Article 50 which assured to those minorities 13 seats in six provinces. The event was attended by representatives of the clergy, politics and Iraqi Christian associations. Msgr. Shleimun Warduni for the Chaldean Church, Msgr. Gewargis Sliwa for the Assyrian Church of the East, as well as representatives of the Syriac Catholic church and Greek Orthodox church. Present were also Abdallah Al Naufali, head of the governmental office for the affairs of non-Muslims, the chief of the police section of Karrada, the Shiite Wael Abdul Latif of the politic coalition Iraqi National List and many Christian political parties.
The event started from the church of Saint Joseph in Karrada and reached, with a procession during which many participants brought a candle lit, the seat of a Chaldean charitable institution. Many the speeches but only one appeal of the presents: revoke the cancellation of Article 50 from the electoral law in respect of minorities rights.
