"The Iraqi Muslims should protect their Christian brothers”: this appeal was launched by the European Council of Religious Leaders (ECRL) today, together with the network Religions for peace.
It was its intervention on the massacre, which the Christian communities have been suffering for long in Iraq and particularly in the city of Mosul in the last few days. “When the Christians are systematically killed just for their religious faith – declared the moderator of ECRL, bishop Gunnar Stålsett – all religious leaders are supposed to condemn these things and work to prevent them. In any society, there is the responsibility to give vital room to minorities. Religious leaders should focus on Scythians and Sunnis but should also work out things in such a way that interreligious efforts may involve the threatened Christian minority, too. Religious dialogue – he concluded – is one of the most crucial questions in Iraq”.
