“An ethnic-confessional division of Iraq doesn’t make sense. The Christians are everywhere in Iraq, in the same way as the Samnites and the Shiites. Why dividing our country?” said to SIR the Chaldean Patriarch of Baghdad, Mar Emmanuel III Delly, in relation to the proposal to create a Christian enclave in the Plains of Niniveh, near the border with Kurdistan, to allow the persecuted Christians to live in safe conditions. “We are against any confessional division of Iraq”, stated the Patriarch, who entrusted his declaration to the Chaldean procurator at the Holy Sea, Father Philip Najim. “We cannot neglect there are difficulties: there are Christians fleeing from the North. It is necessary to help them and give them the necessary means for living, until one day they will be able to go back to their houses, taking back their lands and properties, which they had to relinquish. It is a fundamental right which any State must grant its citizens”.
