“I would like to sincerely thank the Italian Church, in the person of Card. Angelo Bagnasco, for her decision to hold a Day of Prayer for persecuted Iraqi Christians, as well as for our persecutors. Such a decision fills us with joy and shows us the closeness of the Italian dioceses, which have repeatedly expressed their solidarity with us. In our turn, we also pray for the Italian Church that the Lord may strengthen her more and more”, said Mgr. Shlemon Warduni, the Chaldean Patriarchal Vicar of Baghdad.
In an interview with SIR, the Vicar commented on the decision of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) to hold a day of prayer for persecuted Christians in Iraq and for their persecutors on 21 November 2010. The decision was announced by CEI President Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco at the closing press conference of the 62nd general assembly of the Italian bishops that is coming to a close today in Assisi.
