Three terrible days for Baghdad and the whole Iraq began on April 10 2003.
In those frenetic hours when the regime broke up and the American troops took possession of the capital city, with the complete indifference of the occupants, Baghdad National Museum and National Library were sacked. Thousands of artistic and historical invaluable works, the memory of Mesopotamia, the “Cradle of Civilization” disappeared. A lot of masterpieces were returned but many, too many, vanished, swallowed by the art black market that has not scruples about destroying the inheritance of a country and of humanity.
To draw the attention of the world to the 7.000 masterpieces still missing from Baghdad National Museum, and to the still running sack of more than 10.000 archaeological sites in the country, the nonprofit organization SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone organized on April 10, 11 and 12 2007 a vigil for which it was requested to the partecipants to light a candle and to keep one minute of silence.
The initiative was supported by Dr. Donny George, the former general director of Baghdad National Museum who is now living in the USA and working as a professor at Stony Brook University of New York.
On SAFE website is now possible to see the VIDEO of the vigils held in different countries of the world since April 10 to 12 2007, starting from the one held in front of Baghdad National Museum.
