A conference about persecution of Christians. It will be held on October 5th in Brussels, in the premises of the European Parliament (room A5G-2, at 9 – 12.30 h), on the initiative of Comece (Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences), the European Conservative and Reformist Groups and the European People’s Party (Epp) at the European Parliament, with the support of Kirche in Not and Open Doors International.
“Persecution for religious reasons or beliefs still exists all over the world. 75% of deaths from crimes driven by hatred or religious reasons concern people of Christian faith”, explains a notice from the organisers of the conference, according to whom “every year, 170 thousand Christians suffer because of their faith”.
Faced with this phenomenon, “Europe cannot be passive – the notice goes on –. The European Union must take joint responsibility for protecting religious freedom in the world”.
During the conference, Comece will present a report on religious freedom and some recommendations to the EU Institutions.
Guest speakers will include mgr. Eduard Hiiboro Kussala, bishop of the Catholic diocese of Tombura-Yambio in southern Sudan; mgr. Louis Sako, Chldean archbishop of Kirkuk, Iraq; and T.M. Joseph, rector of Newman College in Thodupuzha, India.
