“Mgr. Rahho, taken away by violent hands and hearts, has sown God’s Word. Now, we are full of hope for the harvest that is about to come up”. This was said by card. Leonardo Sandri, prefect for the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, during Mass in the Vatican this morning, for the repose of the soul of the archbishop of Mossul, mgr. Rahho, and all the victims of the war in Iraq.
“Today’s suffering – recalled the cardinal – is preparing fruits of reconciliation in the ecclesial community and in the Chaldean Church and all over Iraq. Let the death of mgr. Rahho, whose last hours are in Christ’s Cup, make peace sprout, at all levels, rooted in prayer, and let it be a spur to all the Chaldean Church, with its bishops, priests and devotees”. At the end of the celebration, which was also attended by diplomats from countries accredited to the Holy See, such as Slovenia, Paraguay, USA, Ireland, Argentina, Albania, Cyprus and Iraq, the Chaldean procurator to the Holy See, father Philip Najim, read a thank-you letter from the Chaldean patriarch of Baghdad, card. Emmanuel III Delly, in which he begs for “peace and tranquillity for the beloved Iraq”. Mass, officiated by Sandri, was concelebrated by cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Papal Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, and by cardinal Bernard Francis Law.
