"The United Nations must take care of the Iraqi refugees in Jordan (1 million, editor’s note), including 25 thousand Christians. Jordan is a small country and cannot receive all this mass of people. Thousands are still arriving, including Shiites, Sunnis and Christians".
"The United Nations must take care of the Iraqi refugees in Jordan (1 million, editor’s note), including 25 thousand Christians. Jordan is a small country and cannot receive all this mass of people. Thousands are still arriving, including Shiites, Sunnis and Christians".
The seriousness of the state of the Iraqi refugees is denounced by father Raymond Moussalli, patriarchal vicar of the Chaldeaans in Jordan. “All these people live in state of extreme uncertainty – he says to SIR –. They can only live off the money they receive from their relatives in the USA, Australia or Europe. Many work illegally. No one has any papers, the residence permit lasts just three months and when it expires they have to pay a residence tax of about 2 dollars a day. And the children born here have to pay as well. Only those who have family abroad can afford to live here". To cope with this situation, which is having “dramatic” repercussions on housing, education and health care as well, father Moussalli asks for “a powerful action from the United Nations. As a Church, we are working through Caritas but our means are limited”. “Let the West – he concludes – speak up before the Iraqi tragedy. The Iraqis want peace and love their land. Help us go back home".
