November 2, 2019
In a very warm welcome Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako arrived this
afternoon (2 November 2019 to the Tahrir Square in Baghdad, accompanied
by Auxiliary Bishops: Shlemon Warduni, Basilios Yaldo, Robert Jarjis,
some priests and young people.
His Beatitude and his companions toured Tahrir Square, Freedom Monument and the so-called “Turkish restaurant”, where he met protesters and their supporters.
Speaking to the media, His Beatitude said: “We came to express our admiration for these young people who broke the sectarian barrier and regained the Iraqi national identity, proving that homeland is precious and invaluable. The thing that politicians couldn’t do. His Beatitude added: We are just like you, have hearts full of love to Iraq and Iraqis and we call on the government to listen to the legitimate “shout” of these demonstrators to fix the situation as soon as possible.”
Finally, there was a moment of silence in front of the freedom monument and prayers for the souls of civil and security forces martyrs, also for the speedy recovery of the injured protesters.
In closing, everyone chanted, with candles: O Lord of peace, give Iraq peace.
