“Five years after that tragedy, the memory of the generosity and great value of the Italian soldiers is still alive”.
According to mgr. Shlemon Warduni, patriarchal vicar of Baghdad, the massacre of Nassiriya, where 12 carabinieri, 5 soldiers and 2 civilians lost their lives, is the occasion to remember, in particular one of these victims, army corporal Pietro Petrucci, aged 22, from Casavatore (Naples). “He – he states to SIR – is an example of the values and abilities of the Italian soldiers. Pietro came from a parish that was twinned to a parish of Baghdad. It was partly through him that we raised funds to build a nursery school and a youth centre here in Baghdad, in the parish of Saint Joseph the Labourer”. “Pietro’s parents – adds mgr. Warduni – donated their money to build this nursery school that will take about 50 children. It is all ready now, but before we can open it we have to wait for some security and stability. I ask you to pray for Pietro and for all the other Italians who were killed in Nassiriya. Partly through his generosity and his sacrifice, some Iraqi children will now have a place to play and study. I hope I will see Pietro’s parents at the opening of the nursery school”. On Saturday in Casavatore, the military ordinary mgr. Vincenzo Pelvi will commemorate Pietro Petrucci and all the other victims.
