In the middle of the Christians in Baghdad and Mosul, taking refuge in the faraway villages of the diocese of Zahko, in the North of Iraq, to bring them help and solidarity. It is the initiative of 50 young people (26 boys and 24 girls) from the diocese of Kirkuk. In spite of the dangers linked with lack of security, they went to the villages of Veshgabour, Dayrabun and Karawella. There, for one week, they revived prayer and social activities for the Christian refugees escaping from Baghdad and Mosul, owing to persecutions. The piece of news was communicated to SIR by Father Janan Shamil, from the diocese of Kirkuk. He talked about “an experience of hope in the Iraqi darkness. The young – he said - are part of the Emmaus diocesan group, established about two years ago, which proposes prayer, meditation, work and solidarity”. “One thing is talking about that, another thing is personally seeing the suffering which lots of our brothers have to withstand in today’s Iraq – declared M.M. to SIR, a young female student from Kirkuk. - Finding oneself in touch with people who lived in big cities but are now living in small villages, after being forced to leave their work, houses and belongings, is an opportunity to meditate, and to hope for a better world. Together, we prayed for a quick end of violence and for peace”.
