“I am really glad to serve the Christians of Mosul and the archdiocese that have suffered and endured so much over the last few years, especially for the death of mgr. Rahho”. These are the first words spoken to SIR by father Emil Shimoun Nona, who has been appointed today by Benedict XVI archbishop of Mossul of the Chaldeans. “There is a lot of work to do, and there are few priests – the new archbishop adds –, but it is the Church that matters, and we go where the Church sends us to. The Iraqi Christians, the Christians of Mosul did and do suffer a lot. Several churches and parishes of the city have been closed down, many people have left the city centre for the suburbs. We will have to work hard, and that’s why we need lots of prayers from everyone, even from outside of Iraq”.
