“A shame, it’s simply a shame”: the patriarchal vicar of Baghdad, mgr. Shlemon Warduni, does not mince his words in condemning the sentence with which yesterday the European Court for Human Rights defined the presence of a Crucifix in a classroom as a “violation of the parents’ right to raise their children according to their own beliefs”.
“This decree is a disgrace for all Christianity – he states to SIR – and undermines even more the Middle Eastern Christian minorities. What help can we expect from those who in Europe remove the symbols of its historical and religious tradition? We fight every day to see our rights to religious freedom and cult recognised, while someone in Europe disowns them. Sooner or later – he concludes – Christians will be asked to become atheists not to hurt the sensitivity of non believers and agnostics”.
