“An important meeting, not only for the Churches of the Middle East, but also for those all over the world, called to rediscover the roots of faith and support the Christians of the Region to prevent them escaping abroad”. With these words, the Patriarchal Vicar of Baghdad, mgr. Shlemon Warduni, explains to SIR the importance of the Special Synod for the Middle East which is due to take place from 10 to 24 October 2010. “The Synod is Benedict XVI’s well-meaning deed for our churches – mgr. Warduni states – that suffer due to the lack of peace and security. The assembly will help the Eastern Churches discuss the many problems that plague them, as well as making their voices heard. The Middle East is emptying of Christians, a sort of plot to send them away can be felt in the air. Joining our voices, approaching the other Catholic and Christian Churches is essential for everyone’s survival. Our calling is to live as Christians in the Middle East”. “The churches of the world – the Chaldean prelate adds – must help their Eastern sisters by giving them assistance and support. The churches of the Middle East that have suffered and have given so many martyrs can in turn confirm in faith all the other churches that are scattered all over the world. A Middle East without Christians would be a catastrophe for everyone; that’s why I hope delegates of the churches of all continents will take part in the Synod”.
