Tells Christians in Kirkuk: "Be Not Afraid"
The murder of two elderly women of the Catholic Chaldean community in Kirkuk has heightened fears of the spread of anti-Christian violence in Iraq, says Archbishop Louis Sako. The archbishop of the northern Iraqi diocese told the group Aid to the Church in Need that a Dominican nun telephoned him late Monday to report the death of Fadhila Naoum, 85, and her sister Margaret, 79.

The archbishop said the attackers broke into the home of the two women located near Kirkuk's city hall and a Dominican convent. The nuns had close links with the Naoum sisters. Just hours after conducting the funeral, Archbishop Sako wrote: "We took care of Margaret and Fadhila. I am really moved and upset about the bad situation which appears to go on without end." The archbishop said that a police inquiry was under way, but no arrests had been made. A police official told the Associated Press that he had ruled out the possibility of attempted robbery. Archbishop Sako commented that the murders were likely to stoke fears that Kirkuk would begin to suffer the same anti-Christian violence as that in Baghdad and Mosul. He said: "There are reports about how Christians in Kirkuk are now beginning to panic. But I am telling them not to be afraid. The situation here is not the same as in Baghdad and Mosul."
