Msgr. Raho rests in his church

The whole Christian Mosul, and not only that, crowded today the church of St. Paul where in a two-hours ceremony Msgr. Faraj P. Raho was remembered after exactly one year from the date of his funeral.
The body of the bishop, transferred early in the morning from Karamles with exceptional security measures, has now finally found its final place. The same Msgr. Raho wrote in his will his desire to be buried in the church that he founded even specifying the place, the right side of the church where the choir sits.
The ceremony, led by the Chaldean Patriarch vicar, Msgr. Shleimun Warduni, saw the participation of many religious representatives. There was, of course, the pastor of St.Paul church, Father Basman Al Dammar, the young priest (27 years old )who, ordered in 2006, after the death of Msgr. Raho had to manage a very difficult situation as patriarchal administrator that had its climax in the wave of violence that on last autumn hit the Christian community in the city causing 14 deaths and the flight of thousands of terrified people to the surrounding countryside or abroad.
There were two bishops of Mosul, Msgr. Gregorius Saliba Chamoun, of the Syriac Orthodox Church and Msgr. Basilius George Alqas Musa, of the Syriac Catholic church. There were other priests, young and the disabled guests of the Charity and Joy oasis, the house founded by Msgr. Raho in 1986 and now co-ordinated by Msgr. Warduni, the Chaldean sisters of the city, including those operating a house for young orphan girls and their assisted. There were many responsible of the government, including the outgoing and the newly appointed mayors of the city, and a general in charge of security and peace-making.

Baghdadhope asked to Msgr. Warduni a memory of the day.

"It was beautiful and moving, the church was crowded. Everyone wanted to honor the memory of the late Msgr. Raho. The coffin in which he had been buried was placed inside another coffin, and now he rests in peace in the church that he founded and had him as the pastor."
The text of your homily will be published tomorrow by the Chaldean Patriarchate website but can you give us a hint about what you said to the faithful?

"What I said was inspired by Psalm 111. The memory of Msgr.Raho will last forever. His death, occurred in such a tragical way, gives us the certainty that the saints in heaven pray for us. I reminded the faithful as the Holy Father praised the courage of the believers and the martyrs, and that on last January when all of us, Iraqi bishops gathered in Rome for the ad limina visit, gave him a cope of Msgr. Raho and a stole of Father Ragheed Ganni it was suggested to save them in the church of St.Bartolomeo, on the Tiberina Island in Rome where, for the will of Pope John Paul II, the martyrs of the twentieth century are remembered.
As men we suffer from violent death, but as sons of God we ask him to forgive those who commit such acts because they don’t know what they do. Physically Msgr. Raho is not more with us but he is in heaven among the martyrs of the faith and we ask his intercession for peace and security, for Iraq, for the clergy and for young people so that they can remain firm in their faith and can continue to live in their own country.
We are Iraqis, original inhabitants of this land, and it is this identity that unites us all. With all the faithful I asked to the Holy Virgin and to St. Paul, the saint whom Msgr.Raho loved more, to help us to live the charity and love. God is love. And it is the love we need for reconciliation."

What about the families who left Mosul on last October?

"I can say that about 80% of them returned to their homes and their occupations. A sign of normalization that gives us hope. "

Mons. Raho riposa nella sua chiesa

Tutta la Mosul cristiana, e non solo, si è stretta oggi nella gremitissima chiesa di San Paolo dove in una cerimonia solenne durata due ore è stato ricordato Monsignor Faraj P. Raho ad un anno esatto dalla data del suo funerale.

Il corpo del vescovo, traslato stamattina da Karamles con eccezionali misure di sicurezza, ha trovato ora finalmente la sua collocazione definitiva. Lo stesso Mons. Raho aveva lasciato scritto nel suo testamento di voler essere seppellito nella chiesa che aveva fondato specificando addirittura il luogo, la parte destra della chiesa dove ha posto il coro.
La cerimonia, guidata dal Patriarca vicario caldeo, Monsignor Shleimun Warduni, ha visto la partecipazione di molti religiosi. C’era, ovviamente il parroco della chiesa di San Paolo, Padre Basman Al Dammar, il giovane sacerdote (27 anni) che, ordinato nel 2006 si è trovato, alla morte di Monsignor Raho, a gestire una situazione molto difficile in qualità di amministratore patriarcale che ha avuto il suo culmine nell’ondata di violenza che lo scorso autunno ha colpito la comunità cristiana della città causando 14 morti e la fuga di migliaia di persone terrorizzate verso le campagne circostanti o all’estero.

C’erano due vescovi di Mosul, Mons. Gregorius Saliba Chamoun, della chiesa siro ortodossa e Mons. Basilius George Alqas Musa, di quella siro-cattolica. C’erano altri sacerdoti, i giovani disabili ospiti e dell’oasi di Carità Gioia, la casa di accoglienza fondata da Mons. Raho nel 1986 ed ora coordinata da Mons.Warduni, le suore caldee della città, comprese quelle che gestiscono una casa di accoglienza per giovani orfane e le loro assistite. C’erano molti responsabili del governo, compresi il sindaco uscente e quello di fresca nomina, ed un generale responsabile della sicurezza e dei processi di pacificazione.

Baghdadhope ha chiesto a Mons. Warduni un ricordo della giornata.
“E’ stata bella e commovente, la chiesa era pienissima. Tutti volevano onorare la memoria del compianto Mons. Raho. La bara in cui era stato sepolto è stata posta in un’altra bara ed ora riposa in pace nella chiesa che lui stesso aveva fondato e lo aveva avuto come parroco.”
Monsignore, il testo della sua omelia verrà pubblicato domani dal sito del patriarcato caldeo, può dare però un accenno su ciò che ha detto ai fedeli?
“Ciò che ho detto ha trovato ispirazione dal Salmo 111, la beatitudine dell’uomo giusto. Il ricordo di Monsignor Raho rimarrà in eterno. La sua scomparsa, avvenuta in un modo così tragico, ci dà però la certezza del fatto che i Santi in cielo pregano per noi. Ho ricordato ai fedeli come lo stesso Santo padre abbia lodato il coraggio dei credenti e dei martiri, e che quando lo scorso gennaio tutti noi, vescovi iracheni riuniti a Roma per la visita ad limina, gli abbiamo consegnato un piviale di Mons. Raho ed una stola di Padre Ragheed Ganni è stata ipotizzata la loro collocazione nella chiesa di San Bartolomeo sull’Isola Tiberina a Roma dove si ricordano, per volere di Papa Giovanni Paolo II, i martiri del XX secolo.
Come uomini soffriamo di fronte alla morte violenta ma come figli di Dio vogliamo chiedergli di perdonare coloro che compiono tali atti esecrabili perché non sanno ciò che fanno. Monsignor Raho non è più fisicamente con noi ma è in cielo tra i martiri della fede e noi chiediamo la sua intercessione per la pace e la sicurezza, per l’Iraq, per il clero e per i giovani perché rimangano saldi nella fede e possano rimanere a vivere nel proprio paese.
Noi siamo iracheni, originari di questa terra, ed è questa identità che ci riunisce tutti. Con tutti i fedeli ho chiesto alla Santa Vergine ed a San Paolo, il santo che Monsignor Raho amava maggiormente, che ci aiutino a vivere la carità e l’amore. Dio è amore. Ed è l’amore che serve per la riconciliazione.”
Monsignore, può dire qualcosa delle famiglie che lasciarono Mosul lo scorso ottobre?
“Posso dire che circa l’80% di esse hanno fatto ritorno alle proprie case ed alle proprie occupazioni. Un segno di normalizzazione che dà speranza.”

In memory of Msgr. Faraj P. Raho

It would be surprising to know that in a Chaldean church, anywhere in the world it is, a mass in memory of the late Archbishop Faraj P. Raho, the bishop of Mosul abducted and killed last year, has not been celebrated in recent weeks so great is the affection that bound him to his community.

From Karamles in northern Iraq, where on March 14 2008 the bishop was buried in a touching celebration; to Baghdad, where the mass celebrated by Msgr. Shleimun Warduni was attended by the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Mar Emmanuel III Delly; to Esklstuna and Stockholm in Sweden; to Toronto in the Chaldean Church of the Good Shepherd, and Oakville in Canada with an ecumenical ceremony attended not only by Chaldean faithful and priests but also by priests of the Assyrian Church of the East, of the Syriac Orthodox church and by the bishop of Mosul of the Ancient Church of the East, Mar Thoma; to California, in the Chaldean Diocese of St. Peter where to the memory of Archbishop Raho was devoted to meditation on the Via Crucis, the last public prayer that the bishop held before being abducted, to Paris, where a Mass was celebrated in the church of the Virgin Mary by Msgr. Petrus Yusef and another will be tomorrow by Msgr. Rabban Al Qas, Chaldean bishop of Amadhiya and patriarchal administrator of Erbil, by Msgr. Marc Stenger, Bishop of Troyes and president of Pax Christi (France) and again by Msgr. Petrus Yusef.
On last Sunday a Mass was celebrated in the Chaldean church of Mar Qardagh, in Erbil.

The parish priest of Mar Qardagh, Father Rayan P. Atto, told to Baghdadhope how in his homely he quoted a speech Msgr. Raho made immediately after one of the many attacks that in recent years hit the churches in Iraq.

In that speech, recalled Father Atto, Msgr. Raho urged the faithful not to speculate upon the events that were affecting them, the brutal murder of Father Ragheed Ganni, killed in Mosul in June of 2007 along with the deacons of the Chaldean Church of the Holy Spirit, or that of Father Paul Iskandar, a Syriac Orthodox priest kidnapped and brutally murdered in Mosul too, not to worry to find a reason for them but to trust to the saving certainty of faith that alone can lead men out of the abyss. Msgr. Raho also reminded to everyone how the Iraqi Christian community had its roots in ancient times and that had always been characterized by his acting in a "friendly way" in its relation to all other parts of the country.

"With that mass," said Father Atto "we wanted to remember Msgr. Raho, his charisma, his goodness of heart, his courage. A man who, it must be emphasized, was estimated and loved by his parishioners as the shepherd of the community but also by many Muslims who appreciated the time all his qualities as a man and as a priest."

Tomorrow, March 14, in St. Paul Chaldean church in Mosul Msgr. Shleimun Warduni, the Chaldean Vicar Patriarch will celebrate a Mass in memory of a bishop who, martyr of the faith, everyone remembers as a man with a strong character, but capable of great kindness, generosity and understanding .

In ricordo di Monsignor Faraj P. Raho

Stupirebbe sapere che in una chiesa caldea, in qualsiasi parte del mondo si trovi, non si sia celebrata in queste ultime settimane una messa in memoria del compianto Mons. Faraj P. Raho, vescovo di Mosul rapito ed ucciso lo scorso anno, tanto è l’affetto che legava lo legava a tutta la sua comunità.
Da Karamles, nel nord dell’Iraq, dove il 14 marzo 2008 il vescovo è stato sepolto in una toccante celebrazione; a Baghdad dove alla messa celebrata da Mons. Shleimun Warduni ha partecipato il Patriarca della Chiesa Caldea, Mar Emmanuel III Delly; ad Eskilstuna ed a Stoccolma, in Svezia; a Toronto nella Chiesa Caldea del Buon Pastore, ed ad Oakville in Canada con una cerimonia ecumenica che ha visto la partecipazione non solo di fedeli e sacerdoti caldei ma anche di religiosi della chiesa assira dell’Est, della chiesa siro ortodossa e del vescovo di Mosul dell’Antica Chiesa dell’Est, Mar Thoma; alla California, nella diocesi caldea di St. Peter dove alla memoria di Mons. Raho è stata dedicata la meditazione della Via Crucis, l’ultima preghiera pubblica che il vescovo tenne prima di essere rapito; a Parigi, dove una messa è stata celebrata nella chiesa della Vergine Maria da Mons.Petrus Yusef ed un’altra lo sarà domani da Mons. Rabban Al Qas, vescovo caldeo di Amadhiya ed amministratore patriarcale di Erbil, da Mons. Marc Stenger, Vescovo di Troyes e presidente di Pax Christi (Francia) ed ancora da Mons. Petrus Yusef.

Domenica scorsa è stata celebrata una messa nella chiesa caldea di Mar Qardagh, ad Erbil.
Baghdadhope ha sentito a proposito il parroco Padre Rayan P. Atto che ha raccontato come nell'omelia abbia ripreso un discorso fatto da Monsignor Raho subito dopo uno dei tanti attentati che in questi anni hanno colpito le chiese in Iraq.
In quel discorso, ha ricordato Padre Atto, Monsignor Raho aveva invitato i fedeli a non chiedersi il perchè degli avvenimenti che li stavano colpendo, del brutale assassinio avvenuto qualche tempo prima di Padre Ragheed Ganni, ucciso a Mosul a giugno del 2007 insieme ai diaconi della chiesa caldea dello Spirito Santo, o di quello antecedente di Padre Paul Iskandar, il sacerdote siro ortodosso rapito e barbaramente ucciso sempre a Mosul, di non arrovellarsi a trovare una ragione ma di affidarsi alla certezza salvifica della fede che da sola può guidare gli uomini verso l'uscita dal baratro. Ed aveva altresì rammentato a tutti come la comunità cristiana irachena affondasse le sue radici in tempi antichissimi e che da sempre fosse stata caratterizzata dal suo porsi come "amica" nei confronti di tutte le altre componenti del paese.
"Con quella messa" ha dichiarato Padre Atto "abbiamo voluto ricordare Monsignor Raho, il suo carisma, la sua bontà d'animo, il suo coraggio. Un uomo che, deve essere sottolineato, era stimato ed amato dai suoi fedeli in quanto pastore della comunità, ma anche da molti musulmani che ne avevano apprezzato nel tempo tutte le qualità di uomo e religioso."

Domani, 14 marzo, nella chiesa di San Paolo a Mosul sarà Monsignor Shleimun Warduni, Patriarca vicario caldeo a celebrare la messa in memoria di un vescovo che, martire della fede, tutti ricordano con un carattere forte ma capace di grande bontà, generosità e comprensione.

On Sunday June 7, 2009, in the chapel of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome there was a mass in memory of Father Ragheed Ganni, the Iraqi Chaldean Catholic priest killed in cold blood along with three sub-deacons of the church of the Holy Spirit in Mosul on June 3, 2007, and who from 1996 to 2003 studied at the pontifical university.

Baghdadhope spoke with Father Amer Youkhanna, himself a priest of the diocese of Mosul and a student at the Irish College who celebrated the Mass in honor of Father Ragheed. "It was a moving celebration. All those people gathered to remember our friend and brother Father Ragheed. There was the rector of the College, Msgr. Liam Bergin, the bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Down and Connor, Msgr. Patrick Walsh, the whole staff and the students."
During the celebration were there specific moments in remembrance of Father Ragheed?
"Sure. At the end of the Mass celebrated according to the Latin rite and in English, I recited in Italian and Aramaic, and together with the other three Iraqi students of the college, one of the hymns that our liturgical tradition dedicates to the martyrs of the faith. Two priests led to the altar two relics donated the Diocese of Mosul to the Irish College that after being blessed on the altar have been placed temporarily at the bottom of the chapel in a glass display case. They are one stole of Father Ragheed and the prayer book he used when living in Rome and that came from Ireland, and specifically from Lough Derg, a major pilgrimage site in Donegal County where Father Ragheed spent a long time."
The relics will be moved to another place?
"In his homily Msgr Bergin said that the intention is to donate the stole to the Basilica of San Bartholomew on the Tiber Island while the prayer book will be placed permanently in the Irish College. In addition to this a portrait of Father Ragheed will be part of a great mosaic the College commissioned to the creative genius of the Jesuit Father Marko Ivan Rupnik and will recall the first martyr of the Irish College who died for his faith in the XXI century."

Father Amer, the diocese of Mosul paid the highest price for the violence in Iraq. In addition to Father Ragheed and the three sub-deacons killed with him we remember Father Paul Iskandar, a Syriac Orthodox priest who was also killed in cold blood, and especially Archbishop Faraj P. Raho, the bishop who was kidnapped and died in Mosul on last year. You live in Rome but you are in contact with Mosul, can you tell us if and how those deaths changed the life of the diocese? "They changed much in the heart of the people. The faithful who took part to all the masses of commemoration of Father Ragheed and Msgr. Raho. Those who remember them for what they were, brave men and priests who did not hesitate to witness their faith in an obviously dangerous situation. With bitterness, however, I must confess that little else changed. After the moments immediately after the deaths, and the words of pain, the local church seems to have forgotten those martyrs. In the final document of the synod held in late April, the first to which Msgr. Raho did not participate, a bishop who died not because of a illness or an accident but because of a horrible criminal act, there was not even a hint at his figure, at the spiritual heritage he left in his diocese. I was deeply saddened. I wanted to read in that document the signs of a synod addressed more to the hearts of the faithful in remembrance of the martyrdom of Archbishop Raho and all the martyrs of the faith. "
And you, Father Amer, what signs did the deaths of two people so close to you leave to you?
"A dull, persistent pain that sometime become worse. With Father Ragheed I lost a brother, with Monsignor Raho a father. It is not easy but now I know, even more than before, the value of the faith in God and the task I have in spreading it."

Riconoscimento postumo a Mons. Faraj P. Raho: "E non temete coloro che uccidono il corpo"

Matteo 10:28 "E non temete coloro che uccidono il corpo, ma non possono uccidere l'anima; temete piuttosto colui che può far perire l'anima e il corpo nella geenna."
Questa la frase del Vangelo di Matteo che ha caratterizzato la cerimonia di consegna a New York del premio Path to Peace Award 2009 assegnato a Mons. Faraj P. Raho, il vescovo caldeo di Mosul ucciso lo scorso anno dopo essere stato rapito nella stessa città.
La frase di Matteo accompagnava la foto di Mons. Raho, di Padre Raghed Ganni, di Padre Paul Iskandar, di Padre Yousef Adel e degli uomini che hanno perso la vita nel corso degli attacchi ai quei prelati, e campeggiava dietro le spalle di Mons. Ibrahim N. Ibrahim, il vescovo caldeo dell'Eparchia di San Tommaso Apostolo negli Stati Uniti che, a nome del patriarca della chiesa caldea, Cardinale Mar Emmanuel III Delly, ha ritirato il riconoscimento per il vescovo martire della fede.
E' stato il Cardinale Celestino Migliore, presidente della Path to Peace Foundation nonchè Nunzio Apostolico ed Osservatore permanente della Santa Sede presso le Nazioni Unite a consegnare il riconoscimento sottolineando come Mons. Raho abbia dato la vita per la pace nel mondo. Parole confermate da Mons. Ibrahim che non ha mancato di ricordare la situazione degli iracheni cristiani e come il riconoscimento a Mons. Raho sia un tributo a tutti i cristiani che sono rimasti in Iraq e che la comunità internazionale ha il dovere di sostenere.

Reliquie di Padre Ragheed Ganni a Roma nel secondo anniversario della sua morte. Padre Youkhanna: "Un sordo, persistente dolore"

Domenica 7 giugno 2009 si è svolta nella cappella del Pontificio Collegio Irlandese di Roma una messa in ricordo di Padre Ragheed Ganni, il sacerdote cattolico caldeo iracheno ucciso a sangue freddo insieme a tre suddiaconi della chiesa del Santo Spirito a Mosul il 3 giugno 2007, e che dal 1996 al 2003 aveva studiato presso l’ ateneo pontificio.

Baghdadhope ne ha parlato con Padre Amer Youkhanna, anch’egli sacerdote della diocesi di Mosul e studente presso il collegio irlandese che ha celebrato la messa di suffragio.

“E’ stata una celebrazione commovente. Tutte quelle persone presenti a ricordare il nostro amico e fratello Padre Ragheed. C’era il rettore del collegio, Mons. Liam Bergin, il vescovo emerito della Diocesi di Down & Connor, Mons. Patrick Walsh, tutto lo staff e gli studenti.” Nel corso della celebrazione ci sono stati dei momenti precisi a ricordo di Padre Ragheed?

“Certo. Alla fine della messa, in rito latino ed in lingua inglese, ho recitato in italiano ed aramaico, ed insieme agli altri tre studenti iracheni del collegio, uno degli inni che la nostra tradizione liturgica dedica ai martiri della fede. Due sacerdoti hanno poi portato all’altare due reliquie donate dalla Diocesi di Mosul al Collegio Irlandese e che, dopo essere state benedette sull’altare sono state collocate provvisoriamente al fondo della cappella in una teca di vetro. Sono una stola di Padre Ragheed ed il libro di preghiere che usava a Roma e che veniva dall’Irlanda, e precisamente da Lough Derg, un importante luogo di pellegrinaggio nella contea di Donegal dove Padre Ragheed aveva trascorso molto tempo.”

Le reliquie saranno quindi spostate in altro luogo?
"Durante l’omelia Mons. Bergin ha detto come l’intenzione è quella di donare la stola alla Basilica di San Bartolomeo sull’Isola Tiberina mentre il libro di preghiere verrà definitivamente sistemato nel Collegio Irlandese. Oltre a ciò un ritratto di Padre Ragheed entrerà a far parte del grande mosaico che il collegio ha commissionato al genio creativo del gesuita Padre Marko Ivan Rupnik a ricordare il primo martire del Collegio Irlandese morto per la sua fede nel XXI secolo.”

Padre Amer, la diocesi di Mosul è quella che ha pagato il prezzo più alto alla violenza in Iraq. Oltre a Padre Raghhed ed ai tre suddiaconi uccisi con lui ricordiamo Padre Paul Iskandar, un sacerdote siro ortodosso anche lui ucciso a sangue freddo e soprattutto Mons. Faraj P. Raho, il vescovo rapito e morto a Mosul lo scorso anno. Lei vive a Roma ma è in contatto con Mosul, può dirci se e cosa hanno cambiato queste morti nella vita della diocesi?

“Molto nel cuore della gente. I fedeli che hanno partecipato a tutte messe di commemorazione di Padre Ragheeed e di Mons. Raho. Coloro che li ricordano per quello che erano, uomini e sacerdoti coraggiosi che non esitavano a testimoniare la propria fede in una situazione evidentemente pericolosa. Con amarezza, invece, devo confessare che poco altro è cambiato. Passati i momenti immediatamente successivi alle morti e le parole di dolore la chiesa locale sembra aver dimenticato quei martiri. Nel documento finale dell’ultimo sinodo tenutosi a fine aprile, il primo al quale non partecipava Mons. Raho, un vescovo morto non per malattia o incidente ma per un orribile atto criminoso, non è stato fatto neanche un accenno alla sua figura, all’eredità spirituale che ha lasciato nella sua diocesi. Questo mi ha profondamente rattristato. Avrei voluto leggere in quel documento i segni di un sinodo più rivolto ai cuori dei fedeli in memoria del martirio di Mons. Raho e di tutti i martiri della fede.”

Ed a lei, Padre Amer, che segni hanno lasciato le morti di due persone così vicine? “Un dolore sordo, persistente, che in alcune occasioni si riacutizza. Con Padre Ragheed ho perso un fratello, con Mons. Raho un padre. Non è facile ma ora conosco, ancora più di prima, il valore della fede in Dio ed il compito che ho nel diffonderla.”

I Tuoi servi Ti applaudano: Pregate o Santi Martiri Maestri della fede, perché ci sia tranquillità nel mondo, le guerre cessino ed i conflitti si allontanino da noi, affinché la Chiesa possa lodare Dio per bocca dei suoi figli.

E i Tuoi giusti Ti glorifichino: Perché i Santi Martiri che Ti hanno glorificato con la loro sofferenza e Ti hanno reso testimonianza con il loro sangue siano davanti a Te, intercessori per i peccatori perché siano perdonati nel giorno del giudizio.

E cantino la gloria del Tuo Regno: I Martiri hanno visto la Gloria del Tuo Regno davanti a loro quando venivano immolati dai loro persecutori e sopportavano con gioia i tormenti inflitti nel loro corpo, ed il nostro Signore Gesù ha accolto le loro anime.

Il loro sangue è prezioso ai Suoi occhi: veneriamo le reliquie dei Martiri che hanno resistito nelle difficoltà con onore e con i canti dello Spirito Santo, per trovare un sostegno nella bontà di coloro che amano Dio nel giorno in cui saranno ricompensati per i loro meriti.

Sia glorificato il Signore nei cieli: O Martiri, predicatori di Cristo Re, le vostre corone sono nei cieli e sulla terra le vostre assemblee, così nei cieli e nelle profondità brillino le vostre memorie, o seminatori della quiete in tutto il pianeta.

Pregate il Signore e siate forti: O Martiri, pregate per ottenere clemenza dal Dio misericordioso, perché si stabilisca la Sua pace nei quattro lati del mondo, e quando si manifesterà il nostro Signore e i vostri corpi saranno portati sulle nuvole pregate affinché possiamo ereditare il Regno con Voi.

Gloria al Padre e al Figlio e allo Spirito Santo: Sia glorificata la forza che si è stabilita nelle reliquie dei Santi la cui voce tuona in tutto il mondo, essendo poste nelle chiese sgorghino da esse aiuti spirituali e si manifesti la verità per la forza delle loro parole.

Dai secoli e per i secoli Amen, Amen: O Martire, che hai amato la purezza per tutti i giorni della tua vita, sei stato prescelto senza macchia per Cristo e per il tuo comportamento nell’assemblea dei santi la tua anima dimora tra gli angeli.

Che tutto il popolo dica; Amen, Amen: O nostro Vivificante, dà a noi il mezzo che Tu pensi sia di aiuto perché non sappiamo che cosa chiedere, ed una cosa sola chiediamo: sia compiuta la tua volontà in noi e la Tua misericordia sia per noi una difesa.

Posthumous award to Msgr. Faraj P. Raho:"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body"

Matthew 10:28 "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

This passage of Matthew's Gospel marked the ceremony in New York of the Path to Peace Award 2009 awarded to Archbishop Faraj P. Raho, the Chaldean bishop of Mosul killed last year after being abducted in the same city. The phrase of Matthew accompanied the photo of Msgr. Raho, Father Ragheed Ganni, Father Paul Iskandar, Father Yousef Adel and the men who lost their lives during the attacks on the prelates, standing out behind Msgr. Ibrahim N. Ibrahim, the Chaldean bishop of the Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in the United States, who on behalf of the patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly, withdrawn the recognition for the bishop martyr of the faith.

It was Cardinal Celestino Migliore, president of the Path to Peace Foundation, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations to deliver the award emphasizing how Msgr. Raho gave his lives for the peace in the world. Words confirmed by Msgr.Ibrahim who did not fail to recall the situation of Iraqi Christians and how the recognition to Archbishop Raho is a tribute to all the Christians who remained in Iraq and that the international community has the duty to support.

Sabato 14 marzo, nella chiesa di san Paolo a Mosul, il vicario patriarcale di Baghdad, mons. Shlemon Warduni, celebrerà una messa per ricordare l’arcivescovo della città, mons. Paulos Faraj P. Raho, ad un anno dalla sua morte. Come è noto mons. Raho fu rapito il 28 febbraio 2008 e ritrovato cadavere il 13 marzo a Mosul.

“Di mons. Raho mi piace ricordare il suo coraggio, come quello di tanti altri cristiani che hanno dato la vita per Cristo – dice al Sir mons. Warduni – i fedeli della sua parrocchia e dell’intera Mosul lo ricordano con tristezza ma anche con tanta speranza e consolazione perché sanno che hanno qualcuno che in cielo intercede per loro e li protegge. In questi giorni tutti stanno pregando per lui in preparazione per la messa di sabato prossimo. Sarà anche una occasione privilegiata per pregare per la pace a Mosul e per tutto l’Iraq”. La celebrazione in suffragio di mons. Raho prevede anche la traslazione della salma dell’arcivescovo, per sua espressa volontà testamentaria, nella parte destra della chiesa di san Paolo, dove abitualmente prende posto il coro dei giovani. Secondo quanto riferisce il sito baghdadhope, “a Mosul, intanto, stanno lentamente tornando alcune delle famiglie cristiane che lo scorso ottobre l'avevano precipitosamente abbandonata a causa dell’ondata di violenza che stava colpendo la comunità e che alla fine costò la vita a 14 persone”.

“As long as there are people like Msgr. Raho, Christianity in Iraq, as in the whole Middle East, will never come to an end”. Father Philip Najim, Chaldean procurator at the Holy See and visitor for Europe, thus recalled the archbishop of Mosul, Msgr. Paulos Faraj Raho, one year after his death (13 March 2008, after about two weeks' kidnapping). “He witnessed his faith until his death, and his memory is alive not only among the believers of Mosul and Iraq, but also for the Iraqi people abroad”, said the Chaldean procurator to SIR. “Msgr. Raho paid a contribution to strengthen the Christian community in the Middle East, together with lots of priests and laymen (I'm thinking of Father Ragheed Ganni and his subdeacons (killed on 3 June 2007 – editor's note), who lost their lives for their faith, becoming martyrs of the Middle East Church. However small in number, the Middle East Church is lively. As long as there are figures like them, the Middle East will remain a fertile land for the Christian faith”. In this sense, “the visit of Benedict XVI to the Holy Land will strengthen the local Christians, and will also remind them that they are part of the Church and in the heart of the Pope”. “Exactly for this reason, during the Jordan stage of his journey – concluded Msgr. Najim, – Benedict XVI will meet the whole Iraqi episcopate in Amman, led by Patriarch Delly. The episcopate was invited for the Pope's visit. It is a highly meaningful gesture”.

I cristiani di Mosul ricordano Mons. Faraj Paulos Raho

La figura di Monsignor Faraj P. Raho, Arcivescovo caldeo di Mosul e martire della fede ritrovato morto il 12 marzo 2008 nei dintorni di Mosul, dove era stato rapito il 29 febbraio dopo aver celebrato la funzione della Via Crucis nella chiesa di Santo Spirito, è stata ricordata da una messa officiata dall'Arcivescovo della città Mons. Emil Shimoun Nona.

La messa ha celebrato anche il 25 anniversario della "Fraternità di Carità a Gioia" dedicata da Mons. Raho, anima della sua fondazione, ai "fratelli disabili" cui nel testamento stilato già nel 2003 aveva dedicato una frase densa di significato: “Da voi ho imparato l’amore, voi mi avete insegnato ad amare”.

On Saturday, 14th March, in the Church of Saint Paul in Mosul, the Patriarchal Vicar of Baghdad, Mgr Shlemon Warduni, is to celebrate a Mass in memory of the archbishop of the city, Mgr Paulos Faraj P. Raho, one year after his death. Mgr Raho was kidnapped on 28 February 2008 and was found dead on 13 March in Mosul.

“I want to recall his courage, like that of many other Christians who had given up their lives for Christ,” Mgr Warduni told the SIR. “The faithful in his parish and in Mosul remember him with sadness but also with a great hope and consolation, for they know that he is in Heaven, interceding for them and protecting them. In these days, we are all praying for him in preparation of next Saturday’s Mass, which will also be an occasion to pray for peace in Mosul and in the whole Iraq.” During the Mass celebrated for Mgr Raho, the archbishop’s body will be transferred to the right wing of the Church of Saint Paul, where the youth choir usually is, as he had explicitly asked in his last will. The website Baghdadhope reported that “some Christians families are coming back to Mosul, after they have left the city in a hurry last October to flee from the violence directed against the community which eventually killed 14 people.”

“Finché ci saranno persone come mons. Raho il Cristianesimo in Iraq, come in tutto il Medio Oriente, non avrà fine”. Padre Philip Najim, procuratore caldeo presso la Santa Sede e visitatore per l’Europa, ricorda così l’arcivescovo di Mosul, mons. Paulos Faraj Raho, ad un anno dalla sua morte (13 marzo 2008, dopo circa due settimane di rapimento). “Ha dato testimonianza della sua fede fino alla morte e il suo ricordo vive non solo tra i fedeli di Mosul e dell’Iraq ma anche tra gli iracheni all’estero” dichiara al Sir il procuratore caldeo. “Mons. Raho ha contribuito a rafforzare la comunità cristiana mediorientale e con lui i tanti sacerdoti e laici, penso a padre Ragheed Ganni e ai suoi suddiaconi (uccisi il 3 giugno 2007, ndr), che hanno perso la vita per la fede divenendo martiri della Chiesa mediorientale, che per quanto piccola numericamente è viva. Finché ci saranno figure come loro il Medio Oriente resterà terra fertile per la fede cristiana”. In questo senso “la visita di Benedetto XVI in Terra Santa rafforzerà i cristiani locali e servirà a ricordare loro che fanno parte della Chiesa e che sono nel cuore del Papa”. “Benedetto XVI – conclude mons. Najim – proprio per questo incontrerà ad Amman, nella tappa giordana del suo viaggio, l’intero episcopato iracheno, appositamente invitato, guidato dal patriarca Delly. Un gesto altamente significativo”.

La chiesa caldea nel mondo ricorda i suoi martiri

Si susseguono in questi giorni le celebrazioni a ricordo di Mons. Faraj Paulus Raho, vescovo di Mosul rapito lo scorso anno il 29 febbraio e ritrovato cadavere nella stessa città il 13 marzo e dei tre uomini - l'autista e le due guardie del corpo - che invece furono uccisi nell'agguato teso al vescovo al di fuori della chiesa dello Spirito Santo.

A Karamles si è svolta una cerimonia a ricordo dei tre uomini uccisi il giorno del rapimento di Mons. Raho: Faris George Khoder (n. 1973), Samir Abdallahd Dahno (n. 1966) e Rami Hikmet Paulus (n. 1975). La Santa Messa, celebrata da Padre Yousef Shamoun Hanna, si è svolta nella chiesa caldea dedicata al profeta Mar Addai dove lo scorso anno si sono tenuti i funerali di Mons. Raho e dei tre uomini, e che accoglie non solo le spoglie del vescovo ma anche quelle di Padre Ragheed Ganni, il giovane sacerdote ucciso anche lui in un agguato tesogli all'uscita della chiesa dello Spirito Santo nel giugno del 2007.

The Chaldean church in the world remembers its martyrs

There have been many commemorative ceremonies in these last days in memory of Msgr. Faraj Paulus Raho, the bishop of Mosul abducted last year on February 29 whose corpse was found in the same city on March 13, and of the three men - the driver and two bodyguards -- who were killed in the ambush set for the bishop outside the Church of the Holy Spirit.

A ceremony was held in Karamles to remember the three men killed on the day of Msgr. Raho,'s abduction: Faris George Khoder (b. 1973), Samir Abdallahd Dahno (b. 1966) and Rami Hikmet Paulus (b. 1975). The Holy Mass, celebrated by Fr. Yousef Shamoun Hanna was in the Chaldean Church dedicated to Mar Addai where on last year was celebrated the funeral ceremony of Mons. Raho and of the three men, and where not only the Bishop is buried but also Fr. Ragheen Ganni, the young priest who was also killed in an ambush set for him and three deacons outside the church of the Holy Spirit in June 2007.

Mosul: domenica 24 dicembre il Patriarca Caldeo in visita alla tomba di Mons.Raho. La chiesa preparata da un gruppo di giovani musulmani

Domenica 24 dicembre* il Patriarca della Chiesa Caldea, Mar Louis Raphael I Sako, si recherà a Mosul per visitare la chiesa di San Paolo.
"E' un gesto simbolico" ha riferito Mar Sako a Baghdahope, "una visita lampo di mezza giornata prima del ritorno a Baghdad per il Natale."
"Con Mons. Warduni (Vicario patriarcale caldeo), Mons. Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf (vescovo siro ortodosso di Mosul) e Mons. Petrous Moshe (vescovo siro cattolico di Mosul) visiteremo la chiesa di San Paolo dove è sepolto il compianto Mons. Farj Raho.**
La chiesa, che ha subìto molti danni, dovrà essere restaurata ma per ora, proprio in occasione di questa visita, è stata ripulita e preparata da un gruppo di giovani musulmani che l'hanno anche adornata con un albero di Natale. Un bel segno di armonia."
"Incontreremo alti esponenti dell'esercito iracheno ed esponenti religiosi islamici per continuare ed approfondire il dialogo necessario al futuro del paese. A Mosul sono tornate circa 70 famiglie cristiane ed anche questo è un bel segno, la nostra visita servirà a dar loro maggiore speranza. E' necessario che i cristiani che sono stati costretti a lasciarle tornino alle loro case, alle loro terre ed al loro lavoro. Senza lavoro non c'è salario e senza salario non c'è possibilità di tornare alla normalità."

Sono molte le notizie che direttamente o indirettamente hanno riguardato gli iracheni cristiani in questi ultimi giorni.
La più nota è quella che riporta il proscioglimento di Tareq Aziz, l’ex vice primo ministro e ministro degli esteri del regime di Saddam Hussein, dall’accusa di avere attivamente partecipato alla repressione che, all’indomani dell’uccisione del Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr (padre dell’ormai non meno famoso clerico Muqtada Al Sadr) e di due dei sei figli nel febbraio 1999, fu attuata nei confronti della popolazione sciita che era insorta nelle province meridionali di Missan, Samawa e Bassora, ma anche nella capitale stessa in quella che all’epoca si chiamava Saddam City e che subito dopo la caduta del regime è stata ribattezzata proprio Sadr City.
Come ha riferito l’agenzia irachena Awzat Al Iraq Tareq Aziz è stato prosciolto con altri tre accusati dello stesso crimine, mentre altri due sono stati condannati all’ergastolo e tre alla pena capitale. Il proscioglimento dall’accusa di avere avuto un ruolo nei fatti del “venerdì di preghiera” come la repressione viene chiamata a memoria del fatto che in due moschee a Saddam City – la al-Mohsin Mosque e la al-Hikma Mosque – furono molte le sue vittime, non è certo che porterà però alla scarcerazione di Tareq Aziz che rimane coinvolto in altri processi. Secondo Al Jazeera egli dovrà rispondere dell’accusa di coinvolgimento nell’uccisione, nel 1992, di 42 commercianti accusati di avere speculato sui prezzi del cibo nell’Iraq già colpito dall’embargo, sentenza che, come riportato dall’agenzia AFP ci sarà a giorni, l’11 di marzo. AFP che qualche giorno fa citava anche il coinvolgimento di Aziz nel processo intentato contro 16 alti esponenti dell’ex regime per la campagna di violenza contro i curdi di fede sciita negli anni 80.
Per ora comunque la notizia del proscioglimento almeno da un’accusa ha suscitato i commenti positivi di alcuni esponenti della chiesa caldea di cui Aziz fa parte.
Così Mons. Shleimun Warduni, vicario patriarcale caldeo, ha dichiarato al SIR che tale decisione è prova dell’avviarsi del paese verso lo stato di diritto che non si fa guidare dallo spirito di vendetta e da pressioni, ed ha escluso che il processo contro Aziz fosse dovuto al suo essere cristiano ma solo in quanto “gerarca del vecchio regime.” Ed ancora Mons. Philip Najim, procuratore caldeo presso la Santa Sede, sempre al SIR ha definito la decisione rivelatrice dell’indipendenza del tribunale – peraltro da tutti sempre invece definito dipendente dal controllo americano e di altre entità politiche, vuoi l’Iran vuoi il Kurdistan, nei precedenti casi di condanna degli imputati - ed un “segno di fiducia per il popolo”. Fiducia “negli iracheni”, ha aggiunto Mons. Najim, segnata anche dall’annunciato ritiro delle truppe americane fatto dal presidente Obama qualche giorno fa, un ritiro che come lo stesso Mons. Najim aveva dichiarato sabato a Radiovaticana se da una parte è giusto da un’altra non lo è perché “oggi l’Iraq non ha una forza capace di difendere il popolo iracheno, perché si tratta di un esercito debole, che non è ancora attrezzato, non è capace di dirigere militarmente questo Paese.” E perché “… abbiamo bisogno di una riconciliazione tra le sezioni politiche che possano creare un esercito che guardi l’interesse del popolo iracheno.” Una riconciliazione che appare in salita se, come ha riportato oggi il New York Times, è vero che Liqa Jaffar al-Yassin, membro del parlamento iracheno e del movimento guidato da Muqtada Al Sadr ha commentato il verdetto di oggi come una “decisione che svaluta il sangue del Sadristi,”

Un’altra notizia è che sabato 28 febbraio nella chiesa caldea della Vergine Maria è stata celebrata una messa in ricordo di Mons. Faraj P. Raho che, rapito quello stesso giorno nel 2008 fu ritrovato cadavere il 13 marzo a Mosul. La cerimonia, cui hanno assistito qualche decina di fedeli, è stata celebrata nella chiesa della Vergine Maria a Baghdad dal vicario patriarcale caldeo Mons. Shleimun Warduni, dallo stesso Patriarca caldeo Cardinale Mar Emmanuel III Delly e da Padre Mushtaq Zanbaqa.
Sempre a proposito del compianto Mons. Raho, Padre Amer Youkhanna, sacerdote caldeo della diocesi di Mosul, ha comunicato a Baghdadhope che il corpo del vescovo, ora seppellito a Karamles verrà translato a Mosul in questo mese. Nel suo testamento Mons. Raho aveva infatti espresso chiaramente il desiderio di essere seppellito nella chiesa di San Paolo, da lui fondata quando era ancora sacerdote a Mosul, e precisamente nella parte destra della chiesa, là dove siede il coro di giovani da lui tanto amato. I preparativi per la translazione e la cerimonia, che comprenderà anche la sistemazione di alcuni oggetti e paramenti appartenuti al vescovo, sono attualmente in corso.

A Mosul, intanto, stanno lentamente tornando alcune delle famiglie cristiane che lo scorso ottobre l'avevano precipitosamente abbandonata a causa dell’ondata di violenza che stava colpendo la comunità e che alla fine costò la vita a 14 persone. A dichiararlo ad Awzat Al Iraq ed a quantificare in 88 quelle tornate nell’ultima settimana è stato il sacerdote caldeo Padre Ameel Al Qoshi che ha dichiarato che “queste famiglie sono tornate dal distretto di Al Qosh” dove avevano trovato rifugio e sistemazione.

Questo segno di speranza che conferma quanto dichiarato al SIR da Mons. Warduni: “La situazione interna irachena sta migliorando” trova prova nella riapertura a Baghdad della chiesa Assira dell’Est del Beato Mar Zaiya che da due anni era chiusa perché sita nell’allora pericolosissimo quartiere di Dora/Al Mekanic. La cerimonia di riapertura della chiesa, allietata dalla presenza di molti fedeli, del coro della chiesa di Mar Qardagh Martire e dei diaconi Albert, Sargon, Akram e Benham, è stata celebrata da diversi sacerdoti della chiesa Assira dell’Est: Padre Yousef Kiurkis ( Vergine Maria), Padre Auraha Dinkha (Beato Mar Zaiya), Padre Yoshia Luay (Beato Mar Audisho – Garage Amane), Padre Aukun Kormiz ( Profeta Mar Mari -Hay Al Amin) e Padre Shmuel Athniel (Mar Qardagh Martire – Camp al Kaylani)

Un’altra notizia degli ultimi giorni è quella della visita in Vaticano di Masoud Barzani, presidente del Governo Regionale Curdo che il 27 è stato ricevuto da Papa Benedetto XVI a cui ha rivolto un invito a visitare il Kurdistan. La notizia, annunciata da Radiovaticana con una nota molto stringata: "Masud Barazani, presidente della Regione Autonoma del Kurdistan Iracheno accompagnato da un seguito" non ha trovato molta eco né in Italia né in Iraq. Eppure qualcosa di interessante, almeno per gli iracheni cristiani, in essa c’era. Chi faceva parte di quel seguito? Come è logico Albert Yelda, ambasciatore iracheno presso la Santa Sede che è di fede cristiana, ma anche Sarkis Aghajan ministro delle finanze del governo regionale curdo che dallo scorso ottobre, quando si mostrò alle telecamere nell'atto di accogliere e confortare i cristiani che avevano precipitosamente lasciato Mosul a causa delle violenze che avevano colpito la comunità e che in meno di un mese avevano causato 14 morti, era letteralmente "sparito" dalle scene.
Una sparizione che in questi mesi aveva suscitato mille domande e mille ipotesi. Malato di leucemia in cura in Iran, in Europa, in Austria; silurato dal Governo Regionale Curdo che dopo averlo usato per "spingere" tra i cristiani l'idea della Piana di Ninive annessa al territorio curdo come unica soluzione possibile di sopravvivenza per la martoriata comunità non aveva gradito l'insuccesso nell'impresa, o perché non in grado di rispondere al parlamento curdo unificato di cospicue somme elargite a piene mani in modo troppo disinvolto; addirittura avvelenato.
Le foto che Ishtar TV ha pubblicato di Sarkis Aghajan alla sinistra di papa Benedetto XVI mettono fine alle ipotesi: colui il cui nome “rimarrà scolpito nei cuori della comunità cristiana” (Mar Emmanuel III Delly) è vivo e probabilmente pronto a tornare in Kurdistan in tempo per le elezioni che il prossimo 19 maggio rinnoveranno il parlamento. Intanto si gode la vittoria nelle scorse elezioni provinciali del 31 gennaio della lista da lui sponsorizzata, quella Ishtar Slate che ha conquistato il seggio riservato ai cristiani sia a Mosul che a Baghdad (in tutto i seggi sono tre compreso quello di Bassora).
E si gode anche l’essere finalmente a Roma, lui, che nell’agosto del 2006 si è visto consegnare dal Patriarca della Chiesa Caldea (prima tra le altre chiese irachene che ne hanno seguito l’esempio) Mar Emmanuel III Delly a nome del Santo Padre Benedetto XVI l’onorificenza dell’ordine di San Gregorio Magno a riconoscenza della sua generosità verso la comunità cristiana.
Per ora, quindi, un mistero è risolto. Da capire ancora però è che ruolo abbia – oltre a quello di benefattore e protettore dei cristiani, ufficialmente Sarkis Aghajan. Il sito della Kurdistan Region Presidency nel riportare la notizia della visita in Vaticano lo ha definito “Ministro delle Finanze del Governo Regionale Curdo”ma il sito dello stesso Governo Regionale Curdo non lo cita come membro del gabinetto unificato in carica dal 7 maggio del 2006 ma solo come vice primo ministro e Ministro delle finanze e dell’Economia del 4° gabinetto in carica dal 1999 al 2006.
Davvero un personaggio misterioso.

Mar Addai and Mar Mari: the first Chaldean parish in Germany

Yesterday in Essen (Germany) there was the important ceremony of presentation to the population of the city of the church and the Chaldean community, entrusted since September 2007 to Father Sami Danka who explained to Baghdadhope how his community is organized.

"That in Essen is not the only Chaldean community in Germany, there are, for example, others in München, Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg. The only difference is that the parish of Essen, which includes the communities of Mönchengladbach, Bonn and Stadtlohn, is the first fully Chaldean. This means that the church where yesterday we celebrated the ceremony was originally a Catholic church but now it is a Chaldean one, a church where our people can follow the functions according to the Chaldean rite. The church, as a building, is dedicated to St. Albert the Great, but the parish as a whole is dedicated to St.Addai and St. Mari, the apostles of Jesus."

Was it a ceremony according to the eastern rite?

"No. Considering that it was an official ceremony of presentation to the city we celebrated according to the Latin rite, but we prayed and sang in German, Arabic and Aramaic."

Who did attend the ceremony?

"The Holy Mass was celebrated by me, by Msgr.Philip Najim Chaldean Procurator to the Holy See and Apostolic Visitator for Europe, officially invited for the occasion by the diocese of Essen, and by Msgr. Wolfgang Miehle, Secretary General of German Bishopric Conference. Among the faithful, about half of whom were Germans, there was Father Cesar Sliwa, the Chaldean priest in Stuttgart, and many German religious and civilian representatives. There was Msgr. Franz Vorrath, one of the auxiliary bishops of Essen managing the vacant seat since the transfer of the former bishop Msgr. Felix Genn to the diocese of Münster.
There was Msgr. Hubert Luthe, bishop emeritus of the city. Father Martin Pischel, vicar general for the affairs of the clergy. Dr. Wilhelm Tolksdorf, vicar general for the pastoral and Father Nikolai, dean of the priests of this area of the city. There were the Mayor of Essen Norbert Kleine-Möllhoff, the commissioner of state for migration of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Kufen Thomas, and the town councillor Gisela Juschka. There were some representatives of Caritas and Marie-Ange Siebrecht of Aid to the Church in Need - Germany "
Father, what did this ceremony leave you?

"The firm belief that the Chaldean community living in Germany has started to integrate in the country while preserving its religious identity. The participation of the faithful yesterday was emotionally tangible and this, for a community living in diaspora, is what cements it, keeps alive the thoughts and memories of the motherland and spurs it to build a life in the country that welcomed it."
In the last days the world celebrated, a year after his funeral, the memory of Archbishop Raho. Was he mentioned in the ceremony in Essen?

It was Msgr.Philip Najim who answered to this question.

"Of course. In the speech I was invited to give besides thanking the Diocese of Essen for the enormous willingness demonstrated to the Chaldean community I spoke about how the church in Iraq is founded on the sacrifice of its martyrs from which it draws strength and faith. Remembering Msgr. Raho then and dedicating a thought to him and to the other Christian martyrs was natural. In Germany, as everywhere in the world, the Chaldean community will always have a special affection for them.”

On last year the European Union called its member states to accept 10,000 Iraqi refugees living in Syria and Jordan, but by now among all the states it has been declared the availability to accept only 5,000 of them, 2500 of whom will arrive in Germany. Among the refugees for whom the Union pleaded the reception there are also the members of religious minorities.

The EU decision sparked protests from several Iraqi bishops who saw in it a further incentive to emigration for the Iraqi Christian community. Criticisms that do not seem to match with the immigration policy of the German Government. The formalization of Mar Addai and Mar Mari as the first Chaldean parish on German soil, however expected, and "in the order of the things," seems to want to emphasize the concept of a "welcoming" state that decides autonomously who can get in its territory.

And that may go beyond the numbers. On the one hand the human rights organizations in Germany that are pushing in this direction by asking for the establishment of a permanent resettlement scheme (currently according to the EU program the refugees are offered a three-year extendable residence permit) or Guenter Burkhardt of Pro-Asyl who stated that more than 2500 refugees are in need of help and that this people, most of them educated, are needed by Germany. On the other hand, the change of the Presidency of the European Union that from July will be assigned to Sweden, a country that, as stated by Dan Eliasson, head of the migration board, since 2006 accepted 80,000 Iraqi, a half of whom as asylum seekers and half as refugees, and that will certainly put pressure on other European governments to contribute more aids to refugees arriving in the Old Continent.

Maybe disappointing who is trying to stop the bleeding of the Iraqi Christian community for the preservation of its origin and traditions but maybe blostering the spirits of those refugees who are unable or unwilling to return to Iraq.

Il delicato compito della traslazione del corpo di Mons. Faraj P. Raho da Karamles, dove fu sepolto lo scorso anno, a Mosul dove si terrà oggi la cerimonia di commemorazione si è svolto senza problemi.

Il Patriarca caldeo prega per Benedetto XVI, per Mons. Raho e per gli iracheni "martiri della fede e della patria"

Si è svolta ieri nella cattedrale caldea di San Giuseppe a Baghdad una Santa Messa presieduta dal Patriarca caldeo, Mar Louis Raphel I Sako, in memoria di Mons. Faraj Paulus Raho, l'Arcivescovo caldeo di Mosul rapito ed ucciso cinque anni fa nella sua città.

Alla presenza del Nunzio Apostolico Monsignor Giorgio Lingua, dei due vicari patriarcali caldei, Mons. Shleimun Warduni e Mons. Jacques Isaac, di Mons. Ephrem Yousef Abba, vescovo siro cattolico di Baghdad e di Mons. George Panamthundil, Segretario della Nunziatura, il patriarca Sako ha anche pregato per il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI nelle ultime ore del suo pontificato affermando come egli abbia dato una "lezione di umiltà e della grandezza della missione della Chiesa" e per i Cardinali chiamati ad eleggere il nuovo Papa.

Alla vigilia del 10° anniversario della guerra contro l'Iraq il Patriarca Sako ha voluto anche ricordare tutti gli iracheni delle diverse fedi che in questi anni hanno perso la vita "ingiustamente ed inutilmente" definendoli "martiri della fede e della patria"
