Homily of the Apostolic Nuncio on the Gospel of John 19
Erbil, Sunday, May 6th, 2012

After the crucifixion of Jesus, the apostles returned to Galilee; they were disappointed. They believed to have found the Messiah; they had left everything behind to follow him: their job, their family, their country. But after having seen what had been done to the one that they had believed to be the Saviour, they have returned to their previous life; to their job, to their houses.
In the passage that has been read today, Peter decided to go fishing: “I am going to fish” and the others followed him: “We are coming with you”. But after a night of hard work without catching anything, a man appeared and asked for something to eat. “We do not have anything!” they had to confess with shame. So, the foreigner invited them to throw the nets from the right side of the boat. They did it and were not able to pull the nets in because of the amount of fish!
When they saw all the fish they had caught, they immediately recognized, who the man was, that “expert in fishing!”. John was the first: “It is the Lord”, he whispers to Peter. Then Peter jumped into the sea to hide his shame; humanly speaking, he was ashamed because he was naked, but also spiritually speaking, I would say, because he felt unworthy for not having recognized the Lord! He jumped into the sea as to hide himself. Jesus said to them to bring him some of the fish. Also this time Peter was the first to jump over the boat to take some fish for Jesus. After eating together, Jesus asked him: “Do you love me more than these”? Jesus asked Peter the same question for three times. Saint Augustine observed that as Peter had denied Jesus three times, Jesus now asked him a triple declaration of love, which was at the same time a triple profession of faith. After each Peter’s answer, Jesus entrusted to him his flock: feed my sheep. This "expert of fishing" when he had called the fisherman of Galilee he had promised him: “from now on you will be catching men” (Luke 5, 10).
Some reflections:
We are at the dawn, when a new day begins. Sign of the life that comes back, sign of hope. The disciples are tired, disappointed, they are about to return home empty handed. And Jesus, who meets them, takes the initiative to come near them and asks to eat. Jesus never leaves us alone, even in the longest and discouraging
trials. Sometimes, in our pastoral job, in our catecheses, in our Christian life, we can also feel like going thru a long night, tiresome, without fruits. We work without seeing any result. We can be tempted to look back, to the safety of the past, the peaceful years of once. Our nets are empty. Here in Iraq, particularly in Baghdad and Mossoul from where many of you come, we have seen our churches empty, the disorientation has invaded many hearts, the community is shrinking, and fear seems to be taken the upper hand. Today's Gospel invites us not to lose hope, because Jesus has not abandoned his disciples, even when he seemed to be absent. He has left them for a while, he has tested them, so they could understand that "without me you cannot do anything" (Jn 15,5), as he taught them.
If we want to see the dawn of a bright day, of a better future for our communities sometimes a little bit discouraged and disorientated, we must allow Jesus to come near us, we must ask him, with perseverance, to come in our midst: it is Him that gives us strength, hope, life, joy. Certainly, he will not delay to come, He has promised to be with us "everyday until the end of the ages!" (Mt 28, 20). He has assured us: " For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them" (Mt 18, 20).
It strikes me the fact that the disciples threw the nets to the right side of the boat listening to the invitation of a "foreigner". They didn't know yet, in fact, that it was Jesus. Yet they trusted him. They acted out of humility and love. They, experienced fishermen, listen to the order of a foreigner, who they did not know who he was, and out of respect for his presence, out of love for this foreigner, they make the effort to throw the nets another time. It is for their humility, united with their charity, that they were rewarded. This humility and this love opened, first of all, the eyes of John and Peter. John the disciple of the love, is the first one to recognize Jesus, Peter followed him and confirmed.
We can see in John the figure of the charismatic church and in Peter the church as an institution. If we want to use the words of the II Vatican Council we can also say that John represents the people of God and Peter the hierarchical Church. Remember that John and Peter are the two disciples that ran together to the sepulchre, "but John ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first. He bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in "(John 20,4 -5) in order to leave to Peter the duty and the honour to be the first to verify! Also in this passage, it is Peter who first jump on the boat, as he was the first who had entered the sepulchre, and verified the abundant catch.
Peter has the duty to verify and confirm, we could also say that he has the task of correcting and leading. But Jesus is not satisfied to only submit an institutional assignment to Peter, a duty of mere control; he wants that Peter’s assignment be characterized by love. For that reason, he questioned him apart and asked him if he loves him more than all the others, even more than John. Jesus wants that whoever has the assignment of governing, of guiding, be animated by a greater love, because it is love that helps in seeing! In confirming to Peter the task to lead the flock, Jesus wants to make sure that he does it out of love, not for personal interests. To govern, therefore, becomes an action of service and not of power.
Obviously, we cannot measure, analyze ‘love’, but if we could, we would say that the love of John is more intuitive and spontaneous; it comes from the heart, while that of Peter is reflexive and sure, it comes from reason. The reason can be slower than the heart, but it guarantees the authenticity and the fidelity of our feelings.
Today we want to remember the VII anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict XVI, 265th successor of Peter. It is him that has today the duty to confirm his brothers in the faith (cf. Lc 22, 32). It is him who has been invited to feed the flock of Christ, to gather Jesus’ sheep in one flock. Unfortunately we see today that many times Christians are divided and that hurts, and it gives a negative testimony to those who are wicker among us, but also to the whole world. Jesus in fact said that his sheep " will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd" (Jn 10,16) and he prayed "that they may all be one so that the world may believe" (Jn 17, 21).
The world cannot believe if we are not united!
The path toward unity is still long, but we must not discourage. After a long night in the Church, we must believe in the dawn of a new day, without forgetting, it must be very clear, that unity doesn't mean uniformity. Diversity is not division. Here in Iraq, for instance, we can appreciate different Christian traditions, different rites, and inside the same Catholic church we have different sensibilities, spiritualities, associations. What it is important is not to be divided! Diversity is a richness, division is weakness! And how can be united people who are different? Thru mutual love, thru mutual respect. On the contrary, what divides us is criticism, it is envy, and it is suspicion… I wish that the occasion of celebrating the anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s election to the pontificate, who has in the Church the charisma of unity, be for all of us an occasion to renew our commitment to love one another as Christ loves each one of us, we will see the Church in Iraq to bloom again with that vitality of the first Christians who also lived in a world that was hostile to them, yet through their testimony, they saw that "day after day the churches grew stronger in faith and increased in number" (At 16,5).
Courage therefore! Let’s put aside our divisions and ask Jesus to come meeting us on the beach, while the night is about to end. With Him is the dawn of a new day! Let's throw the net, trusting Him; we will see a new abundant miraculous catch!
