Santa Sede-Iraq. Benedetto XVI ad Al-Maliki: "Basta violenza!"

Una condanna della violenza che colpisce l’Iraq, comprese le comunità cristiane e un auspicio a “trovare decisamente la strada della pace e dello sviluppo attraverso il dialogo e la collaborazione di tutti i gruppi etnici e religiosi”: è quanto emerso oggi durante l’incontro nel Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo, tra Benedetto XVI e Nouri Kamel Al-Maliki, primo ministro della Repubblica d’Iraq. I colloqui, si legge in una nota della Sala Stampa della Santa Sede, “svoltisi in un clima di cordialità, hanno permesso di esaminare alcuni aspetti fondamentali della situazione irachena, prendendo in considerazione anche il contesto regionale”. Particolare attenzione, prosegue la nota, “è stata rivolta al tema dei numerosi rifugiati iracheni, dentro e fuori del Paese, che hanno bisogno di assistenza, anche in vista di un auspicato ritorno”.

“È stata rinnovata la condanna della violenza che quasi ogni giorno continua a colpire le diverse parti del Paese – afferma - senza risparmiare le comunità cristiane, che sentono fortemente il bisogno di una maggiore sicurezza. È stato espresso l’auspicio che l’Iraq possa trovare decisamente la strada della pace e dello sviluppo attraverso il dialogo e la collaborazione di tutti i gruppi etnici e religiosi, incluse le minoranze, che nel rispetto delle rispettive identità, e con spirito di riconciliazione e di ricerca del bene comune, provvedano insieme alla ricostruzione morale e civile del Paese”. Al riguardo è stata ribadita “l’importanza del dialogo interreligioso, come via alla comprensione religiosa ed alla civile convivenza”. Il primo ministro ha rivolto al Santo Padre un invito a visitare l’Iraq. In precedenza Al Maliki aveva incontrato il segretario di Stato, card. Tarcisio Bertone, e il segretario per i rapporti con gli Stati, mons. Dominique Mamberti.

A condemnation of the violence that is affecting Iraq, including the Christian communities, and a wish that “the way to peace and development may be firmly found through dialogue and cooperation between all the ethnic and religious groups”: this came up today from the meeting between Benedict XVI and Nouri Kamel Al-Maliki, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, in the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo. The talks, according to a release from the Vatican Newsroom, “have taken place in a friendly climate, reviewed some fundamental aspects of the Iraqi situation, looking at the regional context as well”. Special attention, goes on the release, “was paid to the problem of the many Iraqi refugees inside and outside the country who need assistance, possibly with a view to a longed-for return home”.

“The violence that keeps affecting the different parts of the country nearly every day – it states – without sparing the Christian communities, that feel a deep need for more security, has been condemned again. The wish was expressed that Iraq may firmly find the way to peace and development through dialogue and cooperation between all the ethnic and religious groups, including the minorities, that, respectful of their respective identities and in a spirit of reconciliation and in the pursuit of the common good, they may join forces and take care of the moral and civil reconstruction of the country”. In this connection, they insisted on “the importance of inter-religious dialogue as a way to religious understanding and civil cohabitation”. The Prime Minister invited the Holy Father to visit Iraq. Earlier on, Al Maliki had met the Secretary of State, card. Tarcisio Bertone, and the Secretary for the Relations with the States, mgr. Dominique Mamberti.

“L’incontro incoraggerà i cristiani iracheni. Ci si aspetta che tra i temi in agenda ci sarà la situazione dei cristiani ed il loro futuro nel Paese. La Santa sede ha molto a cuore la presenza dei cristiani in Iraq”. E’ quanto sostiene padre Philip Najim, procuratore caldeo presso la Santa Sede, parlando del colloquio, domani in Vaticano tra Benedetto XVI e il primo ministro iracheno, Nuri al-Maliki che giusto in questi giorni è in Europa per incontrare i leader di Germania e Italia.

“Le relazioni Tra Iraq e Santa Sede sono storiche – dichiara al Sir il procuratore caldeo - lo testimonia in maniera chiara il fatto che in tutti questi anni difficili di conflitto e di crisi la Nunziatura apostolica è rimasta sempre aperta. Il Pontefice ci tiene in particolare ad avere relazioni e contatti con i Paesi che soffrono”. “La presenza del premier iracheno in Italia serve ad aprire ad investimenti stranieri in Iraq. Il Paese deve essere ricostruito, ora che la sicurezza sembra in via di progressivo miglioramento. Il Governo deve creare opportunità di lavoro per i suoi cittadini perché questo contribuirà ad aumentare la fiducia degli iracheni nel futuro e ad evitare che questi possano emigrare all’estero”.

Oltre a Benedetto XVI al-Maliki incontrerà anche il card. Tarcisio Bertone, segretario di Stato.

Gli iracheni cristiani che vivono nei governatorati meriodionali del paese lanciano una campagna per il restauro delle chiese che l’incuria e le guerra hanno reso inagibili.
Iu un’intervista rilasciata a Iraqlaan, Padre Imad Aziz Al Banna, il responsabile della diocesi caldea di Bassora, ha dichiarato come la locale comunità cristiana abbia richiesto a tale scopo il finanziamento da parte del governo e stia lavorando in collaborazione con l’ufficio che cura gli interessi delle comunità non musulmane, il ministero della pianificazione ed il consiglio del governatorato di Bassora.
Padre Al Banna ha ricordato la recente riapertura della chiesa di Um Al Ahzan ad Al Amarah, nel vicino governatorato di Maysan ed ha ribadito la sua fiducia nell’azione di preservazione del patrimonio religioso cristiano da parte del governo, sottolineando come la situazione riguardo alla sicurezza incoraggi tale iniziativa, più urgente ora che alcune famiglie precedentemente fuggite dal sud dell’Iraq vi stanno facendo ritorno.
Meno conosciuta e numerosa di quella di Baghdad o del nord del paese la comunità irachena cristiana del sud ha radici antichissime che, nelle parole del sacerdote siro ortodosso della Chiesa della Vergine, Padre Sam’an Khaz’al, risalgono al IV secolo d.C. a conferma di come Bassora fosse già da allora un luogo di diffusione della cristianità verso i territori del golfo arabico.

Recuperare le testimonianze di questa storia è quindi importante e per questa ragione l’appello di aiuto è rivolto anche alle organizzazioni internazionali perchè contribuiscano finanziariamente al progetto.

Campaign for the restoration of the churches in Southern Iraq

Iraqi Christians living in the southern governorates of the country launch a campaign for the restoration of churches that neglect and war made unfit for use. In an interview issued by Iraqlaan, Father Imad Aziz Al Banna, the responsible of the Chaldean Diocese of Basra said that the local Christian community requested for this purpose the financing by the government, and is working in collaboration with the office that takes care of the interests of non-Muslim communities, the Ministry of Planning and the Basra Governorate Council.

Father Al Banna recalled the recent reopening of the church of Um Al Ahzan in Al Amarah, in the nearby Maysan Governorate, and reiterated its confidence in the preservation of Christian religious heritage by the government, underlining how the security situation encourages this initiative, more urgent now that some families previously fled from the south of Iraq are returning. Less known and numerous than that of Baghdad or of north of the country the Iraqi Christian community in the south has ancient roots that, in the words of the Syriac Orthodox priest of the Virgin Church, Father Sam'an Khaz'al, date back to the IV century AD confirming how Basra was since then a place of spread of Christianity to the territories of the Arab Gulf.

GMG Sydney: A Randwick anche i giovani dall'Iraq. Mons. Kassab (Caldeo) "Gioia incredibile"

Alla fine ce l’hanno fatta ad arrivare, anche se all’ultimo momento. La corsa contro il tempo della piccola delegazione irachena, poco meno di 10 persone, per partecipare alla Gmg di Sydney si è conclusa con la partecipazione alla messa finale all’ippodromo di Randwick. A rivelarlo al Sir è mons. Jibrail Kassab, vescovo caldeo dell’eparchia di Oceania e Nuova Zelanda: “il gruppo, guidato da padre Rayan P. Atto, parroco della chiesa di Mar Qardagh ad Erbil, è arrivato solo ieri mattina e subito si è trasferito a Randwick per partecipare alla messa. E’ stato un momento di grande felicità, un sogno che si è avverato”. La partecipazione degli iracheni alla Gmg di Sydney era stata in forse fino all’ultimo prima per problemi legati al rilascio dei visti di ingresso e poi per la soppressione di una tratta del volo verso l’Australia. Ieri il felice epilogo della vicenda.

Sydney WYD: Young Iraqis in Randwick too. Mgr. Kassab (Chaldean) "An incredible joy"

La Gmg dei giovani iracheni, segno di pace e speranza per il Paese

Con una processione eucaristica e la solenne celebrazione della messa si è chiusa la Gmg nella diocesi di Erbil e Amadiyah, alla quale hanno partecipato diverse migliaia di giovani iracheni insieme a gruppi cattolici provenienti dal Libano, dall’Australia e dalla Francia. Alla fine delle funzioni i pellegrini hanno lanciato un messaggio carico di speranza: che la prossima edizione della Giornata mondiale dei giovani possa essere festeggiata “in tutto il Paese”, non solo nel nord come è avvenuto in questa occasione, senza timore di “scontri e violenze”. Questo sarebbe il vero segnale di un “ritorno alla vita, alla pace, alla quotidianità” per un Paese segnato troppo a lungo da violenze.
“La sera del 18 luglio – racconta mons. Rabban al Qas, vescovo di Erbil e Amadiyah – oltre 1000 giovani hanno portato in pellegrinaggio una croce fino al villaggio di Araden, vicino al quale sorge il monastero di Soultana Mahdokhte”. Dal santuario dedicato alla martire irachena del IV secolo “si poteva ammirare tutta la valle di Sapna – continua il prelato – mentre i giovani intonavano gli stessi canti della Gmg a Sydney. Fatica e stanchezza non hanno minato il loro spirito e sui volti era possibile leggere la gioia, l’emozione vissuta durante la lunga giornata di viaggio”.
La comunità cristiana ha condiviso la Giornata mondiale della gioventù con una delegazione francese di Pax Christi, un australiano di origine irachena che è tornato nella terra natale per sostenere l’iniziativa e due giovani emigrati nativi di Shaqlawa – città del governatorato di Arbil, nel nord dell’Iraq – venuti a trovare la famiglia dopo anni di assenza.
Mons. Rabban sottolinea il clima di “condivisione e fratellanza” che si respirava tra i ragazzi, soprattutto per i delegati francesi di Pax Christi che hanno potuto osservare con i loro occhi “la vitalità della comunità cristiana, condividere le tre giornate di preghiera e di festa, ascoltare dalle loro voci la realtà del luogo, le sofferenze e le speranze dei nostri ragazzi, ma soprattutto la forza della loro fede. Essi rappresentano il futuro della chiesa in Iraq, e momenti di incontro come questo possono aiutarli a prendere coscienza della loro identità, della ricchezza della fede in Cristo, di un popolo che cammina assieme alla Chiesa universale”. Un popolo troppo spesso “dimenticato dalla comunità internazionale e dall’occidente”.
Oltre a momenti di preghiera e di catechesi, i giovani hanno assistito a una serie di concerti proposti da un gruppo libanese accompagnato dalla cantante Abir Nehme: la sua voce ha intonato brani della tradizione cristiana siriaca e maronita, impreziosendo ancor di più le giornate dei pellegrini che hanno ascoltato con entusiasmo e passione. “Ho vissuto un’esperienza straordinaria – sottolinea la cantante libanese – che porterò per sempre con me: stare fra questi giovani in un momento storico in cui sono costretti a sopportare difficoltà e persecuzioni a causa della loro fede è, prima di tutto, un’esperienza concreta di missione. Ho visto persone animate da buona volontà, dal desiderio di pace, da una speranza che, sebbene più volte delusa, non smette mai di crescere e costituisce un esempio da seguire”. Con le sue musiche, Abir spera di “aver impresso un segno di ottimismo per il futuro” e conclude dicendo che una parte di lei “resterà per sempre in Iraq, in mezzo a questi giovani”.
Questa mattina il vescovo e i giovani hanno celebrato la santa messa al termine della quale l’intera comunità cristiana ha espresso il desiderio che “la prossima volta la festa possa coinvolgere i cristiani di tutto il Paese”, non solo la comunità del nord. Domani a Kirkuk verrà celebrata la conclusione della Gmg in Iraq, con il cuore e la mente rivolti a Papa Benedetto XVI e ai giovani riuniti a Sydney.

The WYD of the Iraqi young people, sign of peace and hope for the country

With a Eucharistic procession and the solemn celebration of Mass, WYD concluded in the dioceses of Erbil and Amadiyah, at which thousands of Iraqi young people participated together with a group of Catholics from Lebanon, Australia, and France. At the end of the events, the pilgrims launched a message of hope: that the next edition of World Youth Day may be celebrated "in the entire country", not only in the north as on this occasion, without fear of "clashes and violence". This would be the real signal of a "return to life, to peace, to everyday normality" for a country marked for too long by violence.
"The evening of July 18", recounts Rabban al Qas, bishop of Erbil and Amadiyah, "more than 1,000 young people carried a cross in pilgrimage to the village of Araden, near the monastery of Soultana Mahdokhte". From the shrine dedicated to the fourth century Iraqi martyr, "one could admire the entire valley of Sapna", the prelate continues, "while the young people sang the songs of the WYD in Sydney. Effort and weariness did not undermine their spirit, and on their faces could be seen joy, the emotion of a long day's voyage".
The Christian community shared World Youth Day with a French delegation from Pax Christi, an Australian of Iraqi origin who returned to his homeland to support the initiative, and two young emigrants from Shaqlawa - a city in Arbil Governorate in northern Iraq - who had come to visit their family after years of absence.
Bishop Rabban emphasises the climate of "sharing and fraternity" among the young people, especially for the French delegates of Pax Christi, who were able to witness with their own eyes "the vitality of the Christian community, to share the three days of prayer and celebration, to listen to the real voices of the place, the sufferings and hopes of our young people, but above all the strength of their faith. They represent the future of the Church in Iraq, and moments of encounter like this can help them to become aware of their identity, of the richness of faith in Christ, of a people that walks together with the universal Church". A people too often "forgotten by the international community and by the West".
In addition to moments of prayer and catechesis, the young people attended a series of concerts performed by a Lebanese group accompanied by the singer Abir Nehme: she sang selections from the Syrian and Maronite Christian tradition, making an even more special experience for the pilgrims who listened with enthusiasm and passion. "I had an extraordinary experience", emphasises the Lebanese singer, "that I will carry with me forever: being among these young people at an historic moment in which they are forced to bear difficulties and persecution on account of their faith is, first of all, a concrete experience of mission. I saw people animated by good will, by the desire for peace, by a hope that, although repeatedly disappointed, never ceases to grow, and constitutes an example to be followed". With her music, Abir hopes "to have left a sign of optimism for the future", and concludes by saying that part of her "will always remain in Iraq, among these young people".
This morning, the bishop and the young people celebrated Holy Mass, at the end of which the entire Christian community expressed the desire that "the next time, the celebration can involve the Christians of the entire country", not only the community in the north. Tomorrow in Kirkuk, the conclusion of WYD will be celebrated in Iraq, with hearts and minds turned toward Pope Benedict XVI and the young people gathered in Sydney.

La GMG dei ragazzi iracheni: lontani da Sydney, ma vicini al Papa e ai giovani di tutto il mondo.

Sydney è lontana dall’Iraq, ma la GMG viene vissuta intensamente anche in questo Paese segnato dalla sofferenza. In concomitanza con il raduno in terra australiana, migliaia di giovani sono convenuti nel nord dell’Iraq per celebrare la propria GMG. Proprio come a Sydney, i ragazzi iracheni ascoltano le catechesi dei loro vescovi e condividono le proprie esperienze di fede. Alessandro Gisotti ha raggiunto telefonicamente in Iraq l’arcivescovo di Kirkuk, mons. Louis Sako:

"Noi vescovi del nord abbiamo pensato di organizzare degli incontri nelle diocesi di Erbil, Kirkuk, Al Qosh, Karaqosh, Zakho e Amadiya. Sono venuti 5 mila giovani. Abbiamo seguito lo stesso programma di Sydney, tradotto in arabo."

Come stanno partecipando questi giovani? C’è la gioia, anche se non si è a Sydney?

"Oh, tanta gioia ed entusiasmo! Io sto con loro tutta la giornata. Per me e per loro è una nuova Pentecoste. C’è gioia, speranza... Per noi è un impulso per costruire un futuro più sicuro e per una rinnovata presenza cristiana."

Il futuro dell’Iraq riparte proprio dai giovani...

"Certo, ma anche il futuro della Chiesa cattolica comincia con loro e sono loro il futuro. Il loro impegno nella fede, la trasmissione della fede è una garanzia per il futuro del cristianesimo in questo Paese, che vive tra tante difficoltà. Questa GMG è una testimonianza! Attraverso questi ragazzi cristiani, gli altri, il 97 per cento sono musulmani, possono vedere Cristo."

Quindi, questa GMG irachena può servire anche come strumento per il dialogo con i musulmani dell’Iraq...

"Certo, per noi è un evento storico, forse più importante della GMG di Sydney, dove è più facile andare ed incontrarsi. Io sto pensando di preparare un raduno tra cristiani e musulmani all’inizio del Ramadan, per pregare insieme, a Kirkuk, per la pace e per la riconciliazione."

La Gmg degli irakeni, lontani da Sydney e vicini al cuore del papa

Migliaia di giovani irakeni si stanno radunando in diverse città del nord dell’Iraq per celebrare la Giornata mondiale della gioventù. Per questioni di sicurezza e timori di fughe, l’Australia non ha concesso a nessuno il visto per Sydney. E loro hanno deciso insieme ai loro vescovi di partecipare alle catechesi, alle feste e ai momenti della Gmg, partecipando ai momenti di Sydney con una tivù via satellite.

“La Chiesa in Iraq – dice ad AsiaNews mons. Rabban al Qas, vescovo di Erbil e Amadya - soprattutto qui al nord è viva e attiva, legata a tutta la Chiesa universale”. E per rafforzare ancora di più il legame col papa a Sydney, gli hanno inviato anche un telegramma.
Conferenze e catechesi sono organizzate nelle diocesi di Erbil, Kirkuk, Al Qosh, Karaqosh, Zakho e Amadiya. Alla fine delle catechesi e degli incontri del pomeriggio, i gruppi di giovani si radunano a mangiare insieme, in un’atmosfera tranquilla e fraterna, molto diversa da quella a cui sono abituati da anni di guerra.
Mons. Louis Sako, vescovo di Kirkuk, definisce questo “un evento storico”: esso mostra “la volontà dei giovani di testimoniare la fede pur in mezzo a difficoltà e sofferenze”.
Domani i giovani di Erbil, Al Qosh e Zakho si raduneranno insieme – circa 2 mila – in pellegrinaggio fino al santuario della martire irakena Soultana Mahdokhte (IV secolo), nel villaggio di Araden. Domenica, la conclusione della Gmg irakena sarà celebrata a Kirkuk. Saranno presenti anche gruppi di cattolici da Libano, Australia e Francia.

Iraqi WYD, so far from Sydney, so close to the Pope’s heart

Thousands of young Iraqis are gathering in various northern Iraqi cities to celebrate World Youth Day (WYD). For security reasons and concerns over possible defections, Australia did not grant young Iraqis any visa for Sydney. Instead the latter decided with their bishops to take part in local WYD-associated catecheses and celebrations as well as salient moments in Sydney itself via satellite TV.
“The Church in Iraq, especially in the North is alive and active, closely linked to the universal Church,” said Mgr Rabban al-Qas, bishop of Arbil and Amadiya.
To strengthen its ties with the Pope in Sydney, he sent the Holy Father a telegram.
In the dioceses of Arbil, Kirkuk, Alqosh, Karaqosh, Zakho and Amadiya, conferences and catecheses were organised.
At the end of the catecheses and afternoon meetings groups of young people met to share a meal in a quiet and fraternal ambiance, very different from the one they have become used to after years of war.
Mgr Louis Sako, bishop of Kirkuk, calls it an “historic event” that shows the “willingness of young people to bear witness to their faith even in a sea of difficulties and suffering.”
Tomorrow young people from Arbil, Alqosh and Zakho will gather together, about 2,000 strong, for a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Iraqi martyr Sultana Mahdokh (4th century), in the village of Araden.
On Sunday, Iraq’s WYD will end with celebrations in Kirkuk. Groups of Catholics from Lebanon, Australia and France will also be present.

Iracheni e GMG: finché c’è vita c’è speranza

Sembra proprio che la vicenda degli iracheni cristiani che vorrebbero raggiungere Sydney per la GMG sia una storia infinita.
Dopo lo sconforto che ha colpito il gruppo alla notizia dell’impossibilità di essere presenti nella capitale australiana per la GMG a causa di un problema con i voli, la situazione si è oggi parzialmente risolta. Parzialmente vuol dire che a partire saranno solo 6 persone, Padre Rayan P. Atto e cinque giovani della sua parrocchia, la chiesa caldea di Mar Qardagh ad Erbil che arriveranno a Sydney domenica mattina alle 6.00.
“Eravamo tristi ma nessuno di noi ha mai smesso di sperare. Sappiamo che, davvero, saremo gli ultimi, ma il nostro desiderio è riuscire ad arrivare in tempo per la Messa del Santo Padre”
Ma la Santa Messa sarà alle 10.00 del mattino di domenica secondo il programma ufficiale, pensate di fare in tempo?
“Lo sappiamo. Perché non dovremmo fare in tempo? Abbiamo sperato e pregato tanto fino ad ora, la Divina Provvidenza ci aiuterà ancora una volta. Padre Rayan, la vicenda dei visti era ormai risolta ma partirete solo in 6. Una piccola delegazione o a questo punto una visita privata?
“Una visita privata di persone che non sono riuscite a rinunciare al proprio sogno. In ogni caso arriveremo a Sydney indossando le magliette bianche con il logo della GMG e la scritta “Iraq group for peace,” con uno striscione che riporterà la stessa scritta e la stessa immagine e con la bandiera irachena, e finalmente saremo anche noi parte di quella folla di persone che vediamo in TV e che sta testimoniando la propria fede ed il proprio amore per Dio.”
Quando tornerete a casa?

Speriamo che questa sia l’ultima notizia dall’Iraq di queste persone il cui sogno sembrerebbe si stia proprio realizzando, e che la prossima arrivi da Sydney.

Iraqis and WYD: while there is life there is hope

Iraqi Christians who would like to reach Sydney for the World Youth Day seems to be a never-ending one. After the distress that struck the group because of the impossibility to be present in the Australian capital for the WYD owing to a problem with air flights, the situation is now partially resolved. Partly means that only 6 persons will leave: Father Rayan P. Atto and five young people of his parish, the Chaldean church of Mar Qardagh in Erbil, who will arrive in Sydney on Sunday morning at 6.00.

"We were sad but none of us stopped hoping" he told to Baghdadhope "we know we will be the last but our desire is to be able to arrive in time for the Mass of the Holy Father "

But the Mass will be on Sunday at 10.00 am according to the official programme, do you think you will be on time?
"We know that. Why should we not be on time? We hoped and prayed so much until now, Divine Providence will help us once more. We know that once arrived in Sydney we will still need help, for example to find an accommodation, and for this I appeal to the organizers and to the Iraqi community already present in thecity: we did everything we could, we need help to finish the work. "
Father Rayan, the visa affair was resolved but only 6 people will leave for Sydnay. A small delegation or a private visit?

"A private visit of young who were unable to give up their dream. In any case we will arrive in Sydney wearing the white T-shirts with the logo of WYD and the words "Iraq group for peace," with a banner with the same words and the same image and with the Iraqi flag, and finally we will be part of the crowd of people we can see on TV witnessing their faith and their love for God.”

When will you be back home?”
“On the 3 of August.”

We hope that this is the last news from Iraq about these people whose dream seems to be on the point of being realized, and that the next one will be from Sydney.

E’ mezzogiorno e le 21 persone del “Gruppo Iraq per la pace” pronte a partire per Sydney sono riunite nella casa vescovile di Erbil.
Non dovreste essere già in aeroporto?
“Siamo persi!” ripete Padre Rayan P. Atto “siamo andati in aeroporto ma ci ha chiamato l’agenzia di viaggi dicendoci che il nostro volo stato cancellato.”
Il volo da Erbil a Dubai?
“No. La tratta completa era Erbil-Dubai-Singapore-Sydney ma l’ultima è stata cancellata.”
Come è successo?
“Non lo sappiamo ancora esattamente. Sembra però che quel volo non fosse stato confermato e che non ci siano posti. Dovevamo essere gli ultimi ad arrivare a Sydney, ma sembra che saremo gli assenti. E’ davvero un peccato.”

It’s midday and the 21 persons of the "Group Iraq for peace” ready to leave for Sydney are gathered in the Bishopric House of Erbil
Shouldn’t you be in the airport by now?
“We are lost!” repeats Fr. Rayan P. Atto, “we went to the airport but there we were called by the travel agency telling us that our flight has been cancelled”
The flight from Erbil to Dubai?
“No. Our flight had to be Erbil-Dubai-Singapore-Sydney but the last one was cancelled.”

How did it happen?
“We still don’t know exactly. It seems that the flight was not confirmed and there are no seats. We had to be the last arriving in Sydney, but it seems that we’ll be the absent there. It’s really a pity.”

"They told us they are still working. What can I say? We hope, really we hope"

GMG. Gruppo Iraq per la pace: Sydney finalmente!

"Ringrazio davvero tutti" è con voce felice che Padre Rayan P. Atto ha annunciato stamani a Baghdadhope che i visti sono stati concessi dall'Ambasciata australiana ad Amman.

"Ci sono i visti per 27 persone delle quali 21 in partenza da Erbil e le altre sei da altri luoghi."
Lei andrà a Sydney Padre Rayan?
"Si, accompagnerò 5 giovani della mia parrocchia, la chiesa di Mar Qardagh ad Erbil. "
Conferma la partenza per domani?
"Si, domani pomeriggio partiremo da Erbil per Dubai e poi per Sydney"

"Non abbiamo ancora i visti nelle nostre mani ma siamo sicuri. A questo proposito mi lasci ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno contribuito alla realizzazione di questo sogno. WYD. Group Iraq for peace: Sydney at last!

"I really thank everyone" Father Rayan P. Atto's voice is happy announcing this morning to Baghdadhope that visas were granted by the Australian emabassy in Amman.

"There are visas for 27 people. 21 of them will leave from Erbil and the other six from other places."

Will you go to Sydney Father Rayan?

"Yes, I will be there with 5 youth of my parish, the church of Mar Qardagh in Erbil."

Do you confirm your departure for tomorrow?

"Yes, tomorrow afternoon we will leave from Erbil to Dubai and then to Sydney"

GMG Sydney Anche giovani iracheni alla Via Crucis

“Siamo orgogliosi del lavoro svolto da dipartimento per l’emigrazionme australiana per dare soluzione alla questione dei visti per i giovani iracheni” con queste parole mons. Fisher, vescovo coordinatore della Gmg di Sydney, ha annunciato stamattina che i giovani iracheni potranno partecipare alla Gmg. Secondo quanto ha riferito al Sir il direttore operativo della Gmg, Danny Casey, “una parte dei giovani sarebbe gia’ in viaggio per Sydney”. Nessuna notizia invece per quanto riguarda il numero dei visti rilasciati e quindi dei partecipanti. “Il problema – ha spiegato mons. Fisher – è che molti giovani non hanno passaporto quindi è difficile stabilirne con certezza l’identità”. “La presenza degli iracheni permettera’ loro di sfilare con la bandiera nazionale alla Via Crucis del 18 luglio”, conferma al Sir mons. Fisher che invece smentisce l’ipotesi che potessero portare la croce in qualche stazione della Via Crucis.

“We are proud of the work done by the Australian Department for Emigration to provide a solution to the question of visas for young Iraqis”, said Mgr. Fisher, bishop coordinator of WYD in Sydney, on announcing this morning that Iraqi youth could participate in WYD. According to a briefing to SIR by WYD executive director Danny Casey, “a part of the youth are already en route to Sydney”. No information, on the other hand, has been released on the number of vistas issued and hence of the number of participants. “The problem – explained Mgr. Fisher – is that many of these youths don’t have a passport and therefore it’s difficult to establish their identity with certainty”. “The presence of the Iraqis will permit them to join in the procession with their national flag in the Via Crucis on 18 July”, Mgr. Fisher confirmed to SIR, though he dismissed the idea they could carry the cross in some Stations of the Cross during the rite.

I colpi di scena per la questione dei visti ai giovani iracheni cristiani che vorrebbero partecipare alla prossima GMG a Sydney non finiscono mai.
Smentendo il viaggio di Padre Bashar Warda ad Amman annunciato al SIR dal vescovo caldeo dell'Australia e della Nuova Zelanda, Mons. Jibrail Kassab, e confermandone la presenza ad Erbil, Padre Rayan P. Atto ha spiegato a Baghdadhope i termini temporali che lo preoccupano: "Questa sera partirà per Amman un nostro incaricato. Preghiamo perchè tutto vada bene, perchè l'Ambasciata australiana in Giordania rilasci i visti già domani perchè deve avere il tempo di tornare ad Erbil e non ci sono molti voli da Amman."
Se i visti fossero concessi già domani come organizzerete il viaggio?
"Confidiamo nella Divina Provvidenza. Da parte nostra abbiamo prenotato, ma non ancora confermato, i posti per la tratta aerea Erbil- Dubai - Sydney per martedì notte. E' davvero una corsa contro il tempo. "
Quando pensa che avrete la conferma della partenza?
"A questo punto, dopo tante traversìe, mi sentirò sicuro solo una volta in volo verso l'Australia"
Padre Rayan, l'Ambasciata australiana, si è detta disponibile a concedere i visti per 8 persone designate a portare la Croce, vuole spiegarci meglio di cosa si tratta?
"Nel corso dei contatti che nei mesi passati abbiamo avuto con gli organizzatori della GMG abbiamo inviato una lista di nomi di volontari per portare la croce durante il percorso della Via Crucis. Ci sembra che possa essere un gesto simbolico anche delle sofferenze degli iracheni cristiani e della loro profonda fede. Ci è stato assicurato che gli 8 volontari avrebbero potuto portare la Croce per un tratto, e noi speriamo davvero che anche questo sogno possa avverarsi."

WYD and Iraq group for peace: "time is running out"

The 'coups de théâtre' concerning the issue of visas to young Iraqi Christians who would like to be present at the next World Youth Day in Sydney never ends.

Denying the journey of Father Bashar Warda to Amman announced to SIR by the Chaldean bishop of Australia and New Zealand, Mgr. Jibrail Kassab, and confirming his presence in Erbil, Father Rayan P. Atto explained to Baghdadhope the timing issues he is worried about: "This evening a person in charge will leave for Amman. We pray that everything goes well, that the Australian Embassy in Jordan will issue the visas tomorrow at last because this man must have time to return to Erbil and there are no many flights from Amman."

If the visas are granted tomorrow how can you organize your journey?

"We trust in Divine Providence. As for us we booked, but not yet confirmed, the seats for the Erbil-Dubai-Sydney flight on Tuesday night. It's really a race against time."

When do you think you will have the confirmation of your departure?

"At this point, after so many troubles, I will feel sure only once flying to Australia"

Father Rayan, the Australian Embassy, declared its willingness to grant visas for 8 persons designated to carry the Cross, can you explain us better?"

"During the contacts that in the past months we had with the organizers of World Youth Day, we sent a list of names of volunteers who asked to carry the cross during the Way of the Cross path. It seems to us that it can be a symbolic gesture also of the suffering of Iraqi Christians and their deep faith. We had the assurance that the 8 volunteers could carry the Cross for a stretch, and we really hope that this dream can come true."

“Ho saputo del rilascio di alcuni visti ma non ho conferme dirette. Spero sia vero anche se, credo, non tutti potranno venire”. A confermare al Sir la possibilità che l’ambasciata australiana di Amman conceda i visti di ingresso ad alcuni giovani iracheni per la Gmg è mons. Jibrail Kassab, vescovo caldeo dell’eparchia di Oceania e Nuova Zelanda. “Non so dire il numero dei visti che potrebbero essere rilasciati (si parla di 35 circa, ndr) ma certo non potranno partire tutti – afferma il vescovo – il sacerdote che se ne sta occupando (padre Bashar Warda, ndr) sta andando ad Amman in queste ore”. L’ipotesi di una conclusione positiva della vicenda trova conferma anche dal vescovo ausiliare di Baghdad, mons. Shlemon Warduni che, sempre al Sir, dichiara che “ci sono spiragli. A partire dovrebbero essere laici ma nessun seminarista. Speriamo che i visti arrivino subito. Sydney è lontana”. Una preoccupazione condivisa anche dall’altro sacerdote incaricato di accompagnare i giovani, padre Rayan P. Atto che a Baghdadhope dichiara: "siamo rassicurati dal fatto che l'Ambasciata australiana ad Amman abbia nominato un incaricato a seguire il caso, ma siamo preoccupati per i tempi. Andare ad Amman a ritirare i visti, dopo che ci daranno la conferma ufficiale, vuol dire perdere almeno tre giorni per poi dover organizzare in fretta il viaggio fino in Australia”.

WYD. Visas for Iraqis. Mgr. Warduni (Baghdad) "There are some positive breakthroughs"

“I heard that some visas have been issued but this has not been confirmed to me directly. I hope it is true, although I believe that not everybody will be able to go”. Sir received confirmation from Mons. Jibrail Kassab, Chaldean bishop of the Eparchy for Oceania and New Zealand, that the Australian embassy in Amman might grant visas to a number of Iraqi youngsters for them to take part in WYD. “I am not able to tell how many visas might be issued (it is being rumoured that they should be around 35, editor’s note) but for sure not everybody will be able to go – the bishop stated – the priest who is taking care of this matter(Father Bashar Warda, editor’s note) is travelling to Amman right now”.

The possibility that things might turn out for the best is also confirmed by the auxiliary bishop of Baghdad, Mons. Shlemon Wardouni, who told Sir that: “there are some breakthroughs. Lay youngsters will probably go, but no seminarians. We hope to get the visas immediately. Sydney is very far away”. This concern is also shared by Father Rayan P. Atto, the second priest who should travel with the kids to Australia. He told Baghdadhope that: “the fact that the Australian embassy in Amman has appointed an official to deal with this case is quite reassuring, but we are worried about time. It takes at least three days to go to Amman to get the Visas, once we receive an official confirmation. That would leave us very little time to organize our trip to faraway Australia”.
