The long and complicated story of the Iraqi passports.

Before the war on Iraq there were three different kinds of passports in the country each of them characterized by a letter of the alphabet. There was the M series, the first to be declared invalid in the post-war period, the N series the validity of which ended by the end of 2007 and the rare H series.
After the fall of the regime to them it was added the S series and, since April 2006, the G series that replaced the S series no longer accepted as valid because considered unsecure.
Now everything is changing again because according to the latest news the distribution of the new passports of A series will soon begin.
But how different a passport of A series will be? It will be the first Iraqi document written not only in Arabic and English but in Kurdish too as for Article 4 paragraph 1 of the Iraqi constitution Kurdish is toghether with Arabic the official language of the country.
The new passports will be printed at a rate of 600 per minute by 12 machines the Iraqi government bought from Germany for 10 million dollars. In any case the passports of A series will not automatically and immediately replace those of the G series that will remain valid until their natural expiry date.
So an Iraqi could soon have his fourth passport in about a decade - Series M, N or H, S, G and A, without counting the D series passports (diplomatic) or the E series ones (service).

Really it is not easy to be Iraqis!
