NCC urges U.S. to help curtail attacks on Iraq Christians

Recent attacks in Iraq on Christians and other minority groups have prompted the National Council of Churches to ask U.S. government officials to communicate with Iraqi authorities in an effort to bring the violence to an end.
In letters sent April 26 to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, NCC leaders expressed concern about the attacks and asked the secretaries to urge Iraqi authorities and the commanders of Coalition forces in Iraq "to take all possible steps to prevent further incidents of this type."
"Christians in Iraq have suffered more than a dozen violent deaths so far this year, including a three-year old child in Mosul who died on March 27 after a bomb, placed next to his family's home, exploded," the letter said. "As you know, thousands of Christians have been forced to flee their homes because of their fear of violence."
The NCC letter was signed by the National Council of Churches General Secretary, the Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon; the Rev. Canon Peg Chemberlin, NCC President; and 21 heads of NCC member communions and ecumenical officers.
"Our concern is now particularly acute because it is possible that tensions will increase as various political forces continue to vie for power following the recent elections," the letter said. "We fear that a growing climate of mistrust and animosity will further threaten the fragile Christian community."
The campaign of violence against Iraqi Christians is the most under-reported story out of the country since the 2003 invasion, the British newspaper Telegraph reported recently.
Iraqi Christians used to make up about 3 percent of Iraq's population, but now make up for more than half of its refugees, the Telegraph has reported.
Iraqi church leaders who have visited the National Council of Churches offices in New York have implored U.S. Christians to take closer notice of their fellow Christians in Iraq.
Archbishop Avak Asadourian, Ph.D., Primate of the Armenian Church of Iraq, said in a June 2008 visit to New York that he has made it his mission to remind Americans that Christianity has deep roots in Iraq.
Archbishop Asadourian is general secretary of the Council of Christian Church-Leaders in Iraq, which was formed in June 2006 to maintain communication with different Christian bodies and to channel humanitarian supplies to the people in need. Media reports give many Americans the impression that the prevalent religion of the land is the exclusive religion in Iraq, Asadourian noted during his 2008 visit. But Christianity traces its roots in Iraq to the first century mission visits of St. Thomas the Apostle to Mesopotamia.
"Christianity is indigenous to the land since Apostolic times," the archbishop said. "Current trends, however, show that thousands of Christians are emigrating to Jordan, Syria and elsewhere, as are many other Iraqis.”
The NCC letters requested that Secretaries Clinton and Gates work directly with Iraqis to "protect minority groups, including Christians in Mosul and other parts of Iraq' extend necessary humanitarian aid to displaced families; and encourage the preservation of religious and ethnic diversity in Iraq."

Iraq: Warduni (Baghdad) "Continuano le minacce alle chiese"

Chiese ancora nel mirino a Baghdad. L’uccisione, lo scorso 19 aprile, nella provincia sunnita di al-Anbar, dei due capi di Al Qaeda in Iraq, il comandante militare Abu Ayyub al Masri e il leader politico Abu Omar al Baghdadi, non ha fermato le minacce dei terroristi ai luoghi di culto cristiani della capitale irachena. “Continuiamo a ricevere minacce – dichiara al Sir il vicario patriarcale di Baghdad, il caldeo Shlemon Warduni – e non sappiamo cosa potrebbe accadere. Sono state attivate delle procedure di sicurezza ma siamo davanti a gente senza scrupoli capaci di fare ogni cosa. L’invito è alla prudenza ma non basta. In questa situazione l’assenza di un Governo pesa molto. Speriamo che venga formato presto”. Ma non è questa l’unica minaccia cui deve fare fronte la chiesa cattolica in Iraq, che da pochi giorni ha celebrato ad Ankawa un raduno nazionale dei sacerdoti. “Aumentano la pressione e l’attività delle sètte protestanti – spiega il presule caldeo – entrate nel Paese al seguito delle forze americane. Dispongono di molti soldi e mezzi e ci portano via molti fedeli ma soprattutto creano problemi nelle relazioni con i nostri fratelli musulmani per via del proselitismo che fanno”.

Iraq: Warduni (Baghdad) "Threats against churches go on"

Churches are still targeted in Baghdad. The killing of the two heads of Al Qaeda in Iraq, military commander Abu Ayyub al Masri and political leader Abu Omar al Baghdadi, on April 19th in the Sunni province of al-Anbar, did not stop the terrorist threats against the Christian places of worship in the Iraqi capital. “We keep being threatened –the patriarchal vicar of Baghdad, the Chaldean Shlemon Warduni, states to SIR – and we do not know what might happen. Security procedures have been implemented but these are unscrupulous people who wouldn’t stop at anything. We are asked to be prudent but that is not enough. In this predicament, the lack of a Government takes its toll. We hope it will be elected soon”. But this is not the only threat that must be faced by the Catholic Church in Iraq, which a few days ago celebrated a national gathering of priests at Ankawa. “The pressures and activity of the Protestant cults are increasing – explains the Chaldean prelate – they entered the country following the US Troops. They have lots of money and means and take away many of our devotees but above all they cause problems in our relations with our Muslim brothers because of the proselytism they do”.

The priestly meeting in Iraq ends with some recommendations for the future of the Church.

Baghdadhope received by Father Salem Saka and Father Bashar Warda CSsR the account of the three days of intense work of the priestly meeting held between April 19 to 21 in Ankawa (Iraq) organized by the Chaldean patriarchal seminary of St. Peter and the Babel College, the only faculty of philosophy and theology in Iraq. Chaired by the patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly, the meeting had 172 participants who followed the 20 speeches made by bishops, priests, teachers and graduates of Babel College. The meeting had as main themes the priesthood in the Iraqi reality made of violence, migration and attacks on Christian places of worship and the need for the training of the priests and the support of the future vocations. The meeting was attended, besides the speakers, by Msgr. Mikha P. Maqdassi, Chaldean bishop of Alqosh, Msgr.Rabban Al Qas, Chaldean bishop of Amadhiya and patriarchal administrator of Erbil, Msgr. George Alqas Musa, Syriac Catholic bishop of Mosul and Dr. Abdallah Al Naufali, head of the Government Office for non-Muslim minorities.
The meeting ended with some recommendations:
1. organization of biennial meetings focused on biblical, theological or pastoral issues entrusted to Babel College that will announce them six months in advance and to which are invited all priests following coordination of their pastoral duties with their bishops
2. organization of two spiritual retreats of three days each for all the priests managed by the Chaldean seminar of St. Peter that will be announced six months in advance to give the priests the opportunity to organize their pastoral duties.
3. facilitate the pastoral education of priests through texts and pamphlets. Commitment by the Babel College to announce the new publications.
4. Coordination between the bishops and the Committee for the vocations of St. Peter's Seminary for the organization of spiritual and educational meetings with families and youth on the issue of the priesthood and the consecrated life.
5. training of specialized staff for the management of the priests' education.
6. the necessity to reopen the minor seminary and the preparation of qualified personnel for its management.
7. coordination with the Council of Christian Churches in Iraq for the implementation of the above recommendations that should be extended to all Christian denominations in the country.

Terminato il raduno sacerdotale in Iraq con una serie di raccomandazioni per il futuro della Chiesa

Pervenuto a Baghdadhope da Padre Salem Saka e Padre Bashar Warda CSsR il resoconto dei tre giorni di intensi lavori che hanno caratterizzato il raduno sacerdotale tenutosi dal 19 al 21 aprile ad Ankawa (Iraq) ed organizzato dal seminario patriarcale caldeo di San Pietro e dal Babel College, l'unica facoltà di filosofia e teologia in Iraq. Presieduto dal patriarca della chiesa caldea, Cardinale Mar Emmanuel III Delly, il raduno ha visto 172 partecipanti che hanno seguito i 20 interventi tenuti da vescovi, sacerdoti, personale docente e laureandi del Babel College.
La riunione ha avuto come temi principali il sacerdozio nella realtà irachena della violenza, dell'emigrazione e degli attacchi ai luoghi di culto cristiani e la necessità della formazione dei sacerdoti e della preparazione per le future vocazioni.

Rabban Al Qas, vescovo caldeo di Amadhiya ed amministratore patriarcale di Erbil, Mons. George Alqas Musa, vescovo siro cattolico di Mosul ed il Dott. Abdallah Al Naufali, a capo dell'ufficio governativo per le minoranze non musulmane.
Alla chiusura dei lavori la riunione ha espresso alcune raccomandazioni:
1. organizzazione di riunioni biennali incentrate su temi biblici, teologici o pastorali affidata al Babel College che le annuncerà con sei mesi di anticipo ed alle quali saranno invitati tutti i sacerdoti che concorderanno la propria partecipazione con i propri vescovi.
2. svolgimento di due ritiri spirituali per i sacerdoti della durata di tre giorni l'uno organizzati dal seminario caldeo di San Pietro e che saranno annunciati con sei mesi di anticipo per dare ai sacerdoti la possibilità di organizzare i propri impegni pastorali.
3. facilitare la preparazione pastorale dei sacerdoti attraverso testi ed opuscoli dedicati. Impegno da parte del Babel College ad annunciare le nuove pubblicazioni.
4. coordinamento tra i vescovi ed il comitato per le vocazioni del seminario di San Pietro per l'organizzazione di riunioni spirituali e di conoscenza con le famiglie e con i giovani sul tema della vocazione sacerdotale e della vita consacrata.
5. preparazione di personale specializzato per la formazione sacerdotale.
6. necessità della riapertura del seminario minore e preparazione di personale qualificato per la sua gestione.
7. cordinamento con il Consiglio delle Chiese Cristiane in Iraq per la realizzazione delle sopracitate raccomandazioni da estendere a tutte le denominazioni cristiane del paese.

Per lanciare un messaggio di “pace e speranza” a tutto il Paese, i cristiani nel nord dell’Iraq hanno eretto una statua di Gesù che ricorda il Cristo Redentore sul monte Corcovado, a Rio de Janeiro. La scultura è grande un decimo rispetto all’originale – alto 40 metri – che domina la metropoli brasiliana, ma è diventato meta continua di fedeli e pellegrini.
Il 10 aprile scorso p. Louis Kassab, presidente del Comitato per gli Affari religiosi, ha tolto il velo alla statua del Cristo Redentore irakeno (nella foto). Essa si trova a al punto di controllo numero 1 di Baghdeda, cittadina della municipalità di al-Hamdaniya, nel governatorato di Ninive. Najib Attallah, responsabile del check-point dove sorge la statua, riferisce che l’idea è nata proprio dalle guardie addette alla sicurezza. “In passato abbiamo allestito il presepe in occasione del Natale – afferma l’uomo –. Le guardie hanno voluto costruire una statua per le celebrazioni della Pasqua, sulla falsariga del Cristo Redentore in Brasile”.
La costruzione è durata circa un mese e mezzo, dedicando 18 ore di lavoro alla settimana. L’opera è stata realizzata da due guardie del punto di controllo, Alaa Nasir Kithya e Amaar Anay, grazie anche alle numerose donazioni e al sostegno di colleghi e fedeli della città. Il costo finale è di 150mila dinars, poco meno di 130 dollari.
Bashar Jarjees Habash, coordinatore del Comitato per gli Affari religiosi, sottolinea che la costruzione della statua è un “messaggio di pace per tutti”. “La statua è di pietra – riferisce – e può essere rimossa in qualsiasi momento, ma la storia dei cristiani irakeni non può essere cancellata”. Abbiamo alle spalle una storia millenaria, conclude l’uomo, e “mostriamo lealtà all’Iraq”. Alaa Naser Matti, uno dei volontari che hanno collaborato alla realizzazione, aggiunge che “dovrebbe resistere per 30 anni. Abbiamo voluto colorarla di bianco, perché è il colore della pace, e la dipingeremo ogni anno”.
Lo scorso febbraio in soli 10 giorni sono stati uccisi otto cristiani a Mosul, capitale del governatorato di Ninive. Attivisti per i diritti umani hanno chiesto al potere centrale e al governo locale maggiore protezione e tutela verso i fedeli, vittime di una lotta per il predominio nella zona che vede coinvolti arabi, curdi e turcomanni.
Dall’invasione dell’Iraq, nel marzo 2003, sono morti circa 200 cristiani, in attacchi diretti o conseguenza di attentati. Una carneficina che papa Benedetto XVI ha ricordato in occasione della Pasqua, esortando le autorità irakene a “fare di più” per proteggere la minoranza.

Attivisti per i diritti umani hanno chiesto al potere centrale e al governo locale maggiore protezione e tutela verso i fedeli, vittime di una lotta per il predominio nella zona che vede coinvolti arabi, curdi e turcomanni.
Dall’invasione dell’Iraq, nel marzo 2003, sono morti circa 200 cristiani, in attacchi diretti o conseguenza di attentati. Una carneficina che papa Benedetto XVI ha ricordato in occasione della Pasqua, esortando le autorità irakene a “fare di più” per proteggere la minoranza.

To send a message of "peace and hope" to the whole country, Christians in northern Iraq have erected a statue of Jesus, which recalls the statue of Christ Redeemer on Mount Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro. The sculpture is one-tenth the height of the original- 40 meters high - which dominates the Brazilian metropolis, but has become more destination for faithful and pilgrims.
On 10 April, Fr. Louis Kassab, chairman of the Committee for Religious Affairs, unveiled the statue of the Iraqi Christ Redeemer. It has been placed at Baghdeda’s check point number 1,at the entrance to the municipal town of al-Hamdaniya in Nineveh governorate. Najib Attallah, head of the checkpoint where the statue stands, says that the idea came from his security guards. "In the past we have set up the crib at Christmas - says the man -. The guards wanted to build a statue for the celebration of Easter, along the lines of Christ Redeemer in Brazil. "
The construction lasted about a month and a half, the men devoting 18 hours of work per week. The work was carried out by two checkpoint guards, Alaa Nasir Kithya and Amaar Anaya, thanks to numerous donations and support from colleagues and faithful of the city. The final cost was 150 thousand dinars, slightly less than 130 dollars.
Bashar Jarjees Habash, coordinator of the Committee for Religious Affairs, stressed that the construction of the statue is a "message of peace for all." "The statue is of stone - he says - and can be removed at any time, but the story of Iraqi Christians can not be erased." We have a long history behind us, claims the man, and we "show our loyalty to Iraq." Alaa Naser Matti, one of the volunteers who helped build the statue, adds that it "should last for 30 years. We wanted to colour it white, because it is the colour of peace, and we will repaint paint it every year. "
Last February in just 10 days eight Christians were killed in Mosul, capital of the governorate of Nineveh. Human rights activists have asked the central government and local government to increase security and protection for the faithful who are victims of a struggle for dominance in the area that involves Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen.
Since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, about 200 Christians have been killed in attacks or as a result of the attacks. A carnage that Pope Benedict XVI recalled at Easter, urging the Iraqi authorities to "do more" to protect the minority.

Uno sguardo sulla quotidianità dei cristiani iracheni: Christine Hoffmann, segretaria generale di Pax Christi Germania ha riferito la propria esperienza in un convegno svoltosi ieri a Würzburg in Baviera. Hoffmann ha raccontato di un suo viaggio di solidarietà in Iraq. La delegazione era stata invitata dai vescovi cristiani. “Gli iracheni non considerano la guerra che si sta combattendo nel Paese come guerra di religione", bensì come una lotta "per il potere e il petrolio”, ha detto Hoffmann. “Fino al 2003, i sunniti e gli sciiti si sposavano tra loro. L'odio e il terrore vengono portati dall’estero, soprattutto dal vicino Iran”, ha riferito, puntando il dito su “persone e Paesi che hanno interesse ad una situazione instabile in Iraq”. Hoffmann ha raccontato dell’impressione provata nel vedere chiese cristiane sorrette da pilastri di cemento e da posti di sentinella per proteggerle da attentati con autobombe, o la sorpresa nel vedere bambini di tutte le religioni frequentare scuole cristiane. Un’ulteriore fase dei contatti tra Pax Christi e l'Iraq sarà una visita di iracheni in Germania, con cui da anni si svolge il dialogo cristiano-musulmano. Un dialogo che non è utopia, bensì "rappresenta il primo passo per una nuova e maggiore fiducia e per la pace”.

Misure precauzionali per proteggere le chiese a Mosul

Secondo un membro del consiglio provinciale di Ninive appartenente alla lista cristiana Ishtar sono state adottate misure di sicurezza a protezione delle chiese ad est di Mosul.
"Abbiamo ricevuto informazioni da parte dell'esercito iracheno secondo le quali le chiese e le aree cristiane sarebbero a rischio attentati e di conseguenza l'esercito, la polizia e le guardie di sicurezzza hanno preso tutte le precauzioni per impedire qualsiasi atto criminale", ha detto Saad Tanios.
Secondo un membro del consiglio provinciale di Ninive appartenente alla lista cristiana Ishtar sono state adottate misure di sicurezza a protezione delle chiese ad est di Mosul.
"Abbiamo ricevuto informazioni da parte dell'esercito iracheno secondo le quali le chiese e le aree cristiane sarebbero a rischio attentati e di conseguenza l'esercito, la polizia e le guardie di sicurezzza hanno preso tutte le precauzioni per impedire qualsiasi atto criminale", ha detto Saad Tanios.
"Le procedure di sicurezza si concentrano sulle chiese per evitare l’avvicinamento ad esse di autovetture sospette ma non c'è il coprifuoco e sono solo misure di sicurezza basate su informazioni di intelligence. La regione è aperta e la gente si muove normalmente."
I villaggi di Qaraqosh, Karamles, Bartalah dove vive la maggior parte dei cristiani si trovano tra i 20 ei 30 km a est di Mosul. Una fonte ufficiale ha parlato di un'esplosione che avrebbe preso di mira un autobus che trasporta gli studenti cristiani all’università di Mosul ma che non avrebbe causato vittime. La comunità cristiana della provincia di Ninive è stato oggetto nel corso della seconda metà di febbraio di una serie di attacchi che hanno ucciso sette suoi membri tra cui 2 studenti in attacchi separati e tre persone della stessa famiglia. Tutto ciò dimostra l'escalation delle operazioni contro i cristiani soprattutto a Mosul dove convivono arabi, curdi, cristiani e musulmani.

Precautionary measures to protect churches in Mosul

Nineveh, April 20.
Security precautions procedures have been adopted around Christian churches east of Mosul, according to a member in Nineveh province council from Ishtar Christian list.
"We received intelligence information from the Iraqi army reports that the Christian churches and areas will be targeted, therefore the army, police and security guards took all security precautions to prevent any criminal act," Saad Tanios said."
"The safety procedures focus on the churches to avoid breaches of suspected cars, but there is no curfew and they are just security precautions, based on intelligence information. The region is opened and the people move normally. "
Qaraqosh, Karmales, and Bartalah towns, where the majority of Christians live, are 20 to 30 km east of Mosul. An official source said earlier that an explosion targeted a bus transporting Christian students to Mosul University without any casualties.
The Christian community in Nineveh province was subject during the second half of February to a series of attacks that killed seven of them. Four were killed, including 2 students in separated attacks, while three people were killed from one family. This shows an escalation in the operations targeting the Christians, especially in Mosul where Arabs, Kurds, Muslims and Christians co-live.

Iraq: Chiese nel mirino di al Qaeda, conferme da Mons. Warduni

Unità speciali di truppe americane e irachene hanno eliminato, ieri, nel corso di un blitz in una casa nella zona di Batharthar, nella provincia sunnita di al-Anbar, i due capi di Al Qaeda in Iraq: il comandante militare Abu Ayyub al Masri e il leader politico Abu Omar al Baghdadi. Il premier iracheno Nuri al-Maliki, nel dare la notizia, ha anche affermato che i terroristi stavano pianificando una serie di attentati alle chiese di Baghdad. A confermare indirettamente questa notizia al SIR è il vicario patriarcale di Baghdad, il caldeo Shlemon Warduni. “Di questa uccisione non so nulla – dice da Ankawa dove si sta svolgendo un convegno per l’Anno sacerdotale – ma posso dire che nelle settimane scorse fonti della sicurezza ci avevano detto di fare molta attenzione poiché c’era il rischio forte di attacchi alle chiese. Per questo motivo, domenica scorsa, tutte le chiese della capitale erano circondate da militari e polizia. Eravamo a conoscenza dei rischi legati alla possibilità concreta di attentati ai nostri luoghi di culto”.
Circa la decisione da parte della Commissione elettorale indipendente irachena di consentire il riconteggio dei voti dei distretti di Baghdad, in accoglimento della richiesta del premier Nuri al Maliki, mons. Warduni non ha dubbi: “al di là dei riconteggi ciò che è urgente adesso è formare un nuovo Governo. E’ passato quasi un mese e mezzo dalle elezioni e non abbiamo ancora una leadership. All’Iraq serve un governo che sappia garantire pace, stabilità, riconciliazione e sicurezza. Dal voto deve uscire vincitore tutto l’Iraq ed il suo bene”. In questi giorni oltre 150 tra sacerdoti, religiosi, frati e monaci sono riuniti ad Ankawa per un convegno sull’Anno sacerdotale. Tra i temi in agenda la lettera del Papa ai sacerdoti, il rapporto tra famiglia e scoperta della vocazione, l’identità e l’appartenenza cristiana.

Yesterday, special units of US and Iraqi troops, during a raid in a house in the area of Batharthar, in the Sunni province of al-Anbar, killed the two heads of Al Qaeda in Iraq: military commander Abu Ayyub al Masri and political leader Abu Omar al Baghdadi. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, in giving the news, also said that the terrorists were planning a number of attacks against the churches of Baghdad. Over these days, over 150 priest, religious people, friars and monks are meeting in Ankawa for a convention on the Year of Priesthood. Points on the agenda include the Pope’s letter to the priests, the relation between the family and the discovery of vocation, Christian identity and Christian roots.

Un nuovo vescovo per la chiesa siro cattolica negli USA: Mons. Yousef Benham Habash

Dal 17 febbraio del 2009, quando Mar Ignatius Joseph III Younan fu intronizzato in Libano come nuovo patriarca della chiesa siro cattolica la sede della diocesi di Our Lady of Deliverance di Newark per i siri cattolici negli Stati Uniti ed in Canada che aveva presieduto dal 1996 era vacante.
Il 12 aprile scorso il Santo Padre, Benedetto XVI, ha nominato come vescovo di quella diocesi il corepiscopo Mons. Yousef Benham Habash, parroco della chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Los Angeles.
Mons. Habash è nato a Qara Qosh (Iraq) il 1 giugno 1951. Dopo i primi studi compiuti nel suo villaggio natale Mons. Habash entrò all'età di 10 anni nel monastero di Mar Benham ed a quella di 14 in quello di San Giovanni a Mosul. Dopo aver servito nell'esercito per un anno e mezzo, e vista la chiusura del seminario di Mosul, il 23 settembre del 1972 entrò nel seminario patriarcale di Charfé in Libano e successivamente studiò filosofia e teologia presso l'università del Santo Spirito a Kaslik, sempre in Libano. Tornato in Iraq fu ordinato sacerdote il 31 agosto del 1975 nella chiesa della Vergine a Qara Qosh dall'allora vescovo di Mosul, Mons. Cyrille Emmanuel Benni. Nel 1983 fu inviato al servizio dei fedeli nella chiesa del Sacro Cuore a Bassora ma nel 1992 tornò a Qara Qosh. Il 14 giugno del 1996 divenne sacerdote della neo istituita (6 novembre del 1995) diocesi di Our lady of Deliverance che ha sede ad Union City, nel New Jersey. Dopo avere servito la chiesa siro cattolica anche a Chicago (Illinois) Mons. Habash fu trasferito nella chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Los Angeles.
In un'intervista dello scorso marzo Mons. Habash aveva sottolineato il peggioramento della situazione della comunità cristiana in Iraq successivamente alla guerra del 2003. Pur riconoscendo la durezza del regime di Saddam Hussein nei confronti di tutta la popolazione irachena il vescovo aveva ricordato come "prima del 2003 a Mosul non scorrevano fiumi di sangue come oggi. I cristiani non morivano come mosche." Negli ultimi tempi invece, aveva spiegato il pralato, i cristiani sono diventati vittime della persecuzione perchè considerati da molti musulmani come alleati dell'Occidente e perchè presi nel mezzo nella lotta per il predominio nell'Iraq del nord in corso tra arabi e curdi.
Secondo il Patriarca Mar Ignatius Joseph III Younan il 45% dei 160.000 siri cattolici del mondo pur originari del Medio Oriente vive al di fuori del suoi confini.

On April 12 2010, the Holy Father, Benedict XVI has appointed as bishop of that Diocese the Chorepiscopus Yousef Benham Habash, parish priest of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Los Angeles.
Msgr. Habash was born in Qara Qosh (Iraq) on June 1, 1951. After the first studies in his native village Msgr. Habash entered at the age of 10 in the monastery of Mar Benham and at that of 14 in the seminary of Saint John in Mosul. After serving in the Iraqi army for a year and a half, and due to the closure of the seminary in Mosul, on September 23 1972 he entered the patriarchal seminary of Charfé in Lebanon and later studied philosophy and theology at the University of the Holy Spirit in Kaslik, in Lebanon too. Back in Iraq he was ordained priest on August 31, 1975, in the church of the Virgin in Qara Qosh by the then bishop of Mosul, Msgr. Cyrille Emmanuel Benni. In 1983 he was sent to serve the faithful in the Sacred Heart Church in Basra but in 1992 he went back to Qara Qosh. On June 14 1996 he became a priest of the newly established (November 6, 1995) Diocese of Our Lady of Deliverance, which is based in Union City, New Jersey. After serving the Syriac Catholic Church also in Chicago (Illinois) Msgr. Habash was transferred to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Los Angeles.

In an interview on last March Msgr. Habash recalled the worsening situation of the Christian community in Iraq after the 2003 war. While recognizing the harshness of Saddam Hussein’s regime against the Iraqi population, the bishop recalled how "before 2003 in Mosul there were not the rivers of blood like today. Christians were not dying like insects." Recently, explained the bishop, Christians have become victims of persecution because they are considered by many Muslims as West’s allies and beacuse they are caught in the middle of the struggle for supremacy in northern Iraq between Arabs and Kurds.
According to the Patriarch Mar Ignatius Joseph III Younan 45% of the 160,000 Syriac Catholics in the world who have their origins in the Middle East are living outside its borders.Leggi tutto!

Prima comunione a Baghdad: preservare il passato guardando al futuro

Una cerimonia particolare si è svolta negli scorsi giorni nella chiesa caldea di Mar Eliya a Baghdad.
35 tra bambini e bambine hanno ricevuto la prima comunione.
Fin qui niente di strano, anche nei periodi più bui che l'Iraq ha attraversato il sacramento della prima comunione è sempre stato somministrato, anche se solo a pochi bambini.
Ciò che ha reso unica la giornata è stata la richiesta fatta dal parroco della chiesa alle famiglie dei bambini di vestirli in modo diverso rispetto agli anni passati. Così è stato che all'altare si sono presentati piccoli uomini e piccole donne che indossavano i vestiti tradizionali dei villaggi di provenienza delle loro famiglie cuciti dalle donne di casa.
Padre Douglas Al Bazi ha spiegato a Baghdadhope il perchè di questa scelta controcorrente.
"Quando ho proposto di far indossare ai bambini i vestiti tradizionali le famiglie erano perplesse fino al punto di parlarne direttamente con il nostro patriarca, il Cardinale Mar Emmanuel III Delly, che mi ha chiesto il perchè di quella richiesta. La mia risposta è stata che mi sembrava il modo giusto per affermare la nostra identità che è fatta di liturgia, lingua, cibo, tradizione ma anche di abbigliamento. Non si tratta di un ritorno al passato, quanto piuttosto del desiderio di vivere il presente e pensare al futuro senza perdere ciò che ci ha reso ciò che siamo."
E' la prima volta che la cerimonia della prima comunione prevede gli abiti tradizionali?
"Per quanto ne sappia io negli ultimi decenni sì. Molti anni fa si usava vestire i bambini e le bambine come degli sposi in miniatura. Nel duro periodo dell'embargo si usò invece vestirli come piccole suore e piccoli monaci. Perchè non con gli abiti tradizionali?"
Gli abiti sono quindi rappresentativi delle tradizioni dei villaggi o anche delle città?
"La maggior parte delle famiglie dei bambini viene da villaggi del nord come Tel kaif, Batnaya o Tellesqof. Ma ce ne sono alcune originarie di Mosul ed in quel caso i bambini sono indistinguibili nell'abbigliamento dai bambini arabi. C'è anche un bambino che viene da un villaggio a maggioranza assira e che quindi veste con gli abiti tradizionali assiri."
Le famiglie erano perplesse dunque, e poi?
"Poi però la cerimonia è piaciuta a tutti tanto che anche chi aveva portato dei vestiti di ricambio da fare indossare ai bambini una volta finita ha preferito che rimanessero vestiti in modo tradizionale. Noi siamo iracheni e cristiani, quelle sono le nostre tradizioni. Ricordarle potrà solo arricchire il nostro bagaglio culturale. I colori ed i decori non hanno tolto nulla alla sacralità del momento che è stata a lungo preparata dal catechismo, ma sono certo che rimarranno per sempre nei ricordi di quei bambini e dei loro genitori."

First communion in Baghdad: preserving the past looking at the future

A special ceremony was held in recent days in Mar Eliya Chaldean church in Baghdad.
35 boys and girls received their First Communion.
So far nothing strange, even in Iraq's darkest times the sacrament of first communion was always administered, although only to a few children. What made the day a unique one was the request made by the parish priest to the children's families to dress them differently than in previous years. Thus was that at the altar there were little men and women wearing the traditional clothes of the villages their families come from sewn for them by their female relatives.
Father Douglas Al Bazi explained to Baghdadhope the reason of this upstream choice.
"When I proposed to make the children wear the traditional clothes their families were perplexed to the point of talking directly with our Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly, who asked me the reason of my request. My answer was that I think it is the right way to assert our identity which is made of liturgy, language, food, tradition but also clothes. This is not a throwback, but rather a desire to live the present and look to the future without loosing what made us who we are."
Is it the first time that the first communion ceremony includes traditional clothes?
"As far as I know in the last decades yes. Many years ago they used to dress the children like little newlyweds. In the harsh embargo time they used instead to be dressed like little monks and nuns. Why do not use the traditional clothes?"
"When I proposed to make the children wear the traditional clothes their families were perplexed to the point of talking directly with our Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly, who asked me the reason of my request. My answer was that I think it is the right way to assert our identity which is made of liturgy, language, food, tradition but also clothes. We are Iraqi Christians, those are our traditions. Remembering can only enrich our culture. The colours and the decorations did not not diminish the sacredness of the moment that had been prepared by the catechism, but I am sure that will remain forever in the memories of those children and their parents. "

Il destino di un cimitero cristiano in Iraq

Da decenni in Iraq "pace" è una parola strana. Lo è per i vivi la cui vita non si può ancora dire sia normale. Lo è anche per i morti che molte volte nonriescono a trovarla neanche nella loro ultima dimora.
A circa 25 km a nord-est di Baghdad, lungo una strada polverosa e larga non lontana da quella che unisce la capitale a Baquba, sorgono dei cimiteri. Fianco a fianco, su terreni che circa 50 anni fa furono concessi gratuitamente dal governo alle diverse chiese per i propri riti funebri, riposano cristiani di diverse confessioni.
Tra quei cimiteri c'è quello caldeo che il patriarca vicario, Mons. Shleimun Warduni, ha visitato nelle scorse settimane.
Baghdadhope ha chiesto a Mons. Warduni il perchè delle disastrose condizioni in cui versa quel luogo e che sono testimoniate dalle foto scattate da Padre Douglas Al Bazi.
"I motivi sono diversi" ha dichiarato il presule, "per prima cosa l'area in cui si trova il cimitero per molti anni è stata molto pericolosa, certamente il cimitero è stato saccheggiato dai ladri che si sono impadroniti del marmo delle lapidi e del ferro ma soprattutto è stato mal costruito e mal conservato." "Il terreno in molti casi non ha retto il peso delle successive costruzioni. All'inizio alle famiglie veniva concesso uno spazio dove seppellire i propri morti vicini, poi si iniziarono a costruire tombe singole, successivamente queste tombe cominciarono ad essere ornate da piccoli monumenti funebri e da poco si è tornati a maggiore semplicità con tombe ornate dalle sole lapidi."
A chi è affidata la gestione del cimitero?
"Il cimitero fu voluto dal compianto patriarca Mar Raphael Bedaweed che ne affidò la gestione alla Chaldean Charity Association. Pur tenendo conto delle difficoltà di operare lavori di manutenzione la chiesa si augura che essi vengano svolti al più presto così come espressamente richiesto dal patriarca, Cardinale Mar Emmanuel III Delly. Per adesso la zona è stata recintata ed affidata ad un guardiano. Il rispetto dei morti è nella tradizione cristiana e non dobbiamo dimenticare che all'interno dell'area c'è anche una piccola cappella dove si svolge la commemorazione dei defunti. Per questa ragione la chiesa caldea farà il possibile perchè il luogo torni ad essere l'oasi di pace che merita."
Può sembrare strano che in un paese dove si fa fatica a vivere si pensi ai cimiteri ma la normalizzazione passa anche attraverso la loro sorte perchè, come ha detto Padre Al Bazi commentando le foto "la sofferenza non appartiene ai soli cristiani vivi, ma anche a quelli morti."

The fate of a Christian cemetery in Iraq

Since decades ago "peace" is a strange word in Iraq. It is so also for the dead who many times cannot find it even in their last home. At about 25 km northeast of Baghdad, along a dusty and wide road not far from the one that joins the capital city to Baquba, there are some cemeteries. Side by side, on a piece of land that about 50 years ago were given by free by the government to the various churches for their funeral rites, rest Christians of different confessions. Among these cemeteries there is the Chaldean one that the Patriarchal Vicar, Msgr. Shleimun Warduni, visited some weeks ago.

"There are many reasons," said the prelate, "the first is that the area where the cemetery is has been a very dangerous one for many years, certainly the cemetery has been plundered by thieves who seized the marble tombstones and the iron but above all it was poorly built and badly maintained." "The soil in many cases did not hold the weight of subsequent constructions. In the beginning the families were given a place to bury their dead close together, then individual graves began to be built, then these graves began to be decorated with small memorials and recently there has been a return to more simple tombs adorned only with plaques."

Iraq: anno sacerdotale, raduno dei sacerdoti ad Ankawa

Si svolgerà dal 18 al 21 aprile, ad Ankawa, un raduno nazionale dei sacerdoti iracheni, voluto dal patriarcato caldeo di Baghdad, per celebrare l’Anno sacerdotale con a tema il sacerdozio e le vocazioni. A dare la notizia al Sir è mons. Shlemon Warduni, vicario patriarcale caldeo di Baghdad: “a presiedere sarà il patriarca caldeo il card. Mar Emmanuel III Delly e sono attesi numerosi sacerdoti e religiosi dalle diverse diocesi del Paese. In questi giorni di incontro avremo modo di parlare del sacerdozio oggi e del ruolo della famiglia per promuovere le vocazioni al sacerdozio e alla vita religiosa. Speriamo che ci siano le condizioni di sicurezza per consentire una grande partecipazione”. Nell’ordine del giorno, sottolinea il presule, non è previsto nessun dibattito sullo scandalo degli abusi sessuali commessi da sacerdoti e religiosi della Chiesa cattolica: “al Pontefice – ribadisce mons. Warduni - va tutta la nostra solidarietà e vicinanza. Siamo di fronte ad attacchi strumentali contro la Chiesa che condanna questi atti terribili ed è decisa a fare pulizia e a rendere giustizia alle vittime. E’ il momento in cui i cristiani devono restare uniti per fronteggiare questi attacchi che vogliono infangare la Chiesa e la moltitudine di sacerdoti e religiosi che con lealtà e purezza di spirito portano avanti la loro missione pastorale a favore degli ultimi”.

Iraq: year for priests, gathering of priests in Ankawa

The national gathering of Iraqi priests organised by the Chaldean Patriarchate of Baghdad to mark the Year for Priests is due to be held in Ankawa from 18 to 21 April on the theme priesthood and vocations. The news was relayed to SIR by the Chaldean patriarchal vicar of Baghdad Mgr. Shlemon Warduni: “Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly will preside at the celebration and many priests and religious from various Iraqi dioceses are expected to come. The gathering will be the occasion to speak about priesthood today and the role of the family in promoting vocations to priesthood and religious life. We hope that security conditions will be such as to allow a wide participation”. As for the agenda, the bishop highlights that there won’t be any debate on the scandal of child abuse committed by priests and religious of the Catholic Church: “We assure the Pope of our full solidarity and closeness”, declared Mgr Warduni. “We are faced with the exploitation of attacks against the Church which, for its part, condemns these terrible acts and is determined to clean up and render justice to the victims. Christians are now called to remain united to face these attacks aimed at discrediting the Church and the many priests and religious who are carrying out their pastoral mission, with faith and purity of soul, at the service of the least”.

Iraq: Mons. warduni (Baghdad) "siamo nel caos, manca la legge"

“Siamo nel caos. Mancano la legge e la sicurezza. Non sappiamo cosa può accaderci fra un attimo. Possiamo solo confidare nel Signore”. Così il vicario patriarcale caldeo di Baghdad, mons. Shlemon Warduni, commenta al Sir l’ondata di violenza e di bombe che in questi ultimi giorni hanno devastato la capitale provocando decine di morti e centinaia di feriti. Secondo diversi analisti si tratterebbe di un avviso contro le trattative per il nuovo Governo, dopo il voto del 7 marzo che ha visto vincere di soli due seggi di scarto il blocco laico di Iyyad Allawi contro quello del premier uscente Nouri al Maliki. “La formazione del nuovo Governo – dichiara il vescovo caldeo - non si sa come andrà a finire. Ci sono tanti interessi in ballo, dei partiti ma ci sono anche interventi esterni”. Nonostante ciò, aggiunge, “le comunità cristiane hanno potuto celebrare la Pasqua in relativa tranquillità, anche a Mosul. Solo domenica di Pasqua, dopo le 11.30, quando abbiamo udito scoppi tremendi all’esterno ci sono stati dei fedeli che hanno lasciato la chiesa ma la maggioranza e rimasta a pregare. Ed quello che continueremo a fare per il nostro Paese e per tutto il suo popolo”.

Easter Mass attendance renews hope in times of strife

A leading archbishop has spoken of renewed hopes for the survival of Christianity in one of Iraq’s most troubled regions after Easter celebrations passed off peacefully – with increased numbers attending the services.
Archbishop Amil Nona said altogether up to 1,500 people attended Chaldean-rite Easter Mass in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul – an increase on previous years.
Speaking on Tuesday 6th April in an interview with Aid to the Church in Need, the Archbishop of Mosul said the Easter celebrations gave “new hope”, especially after the all important 7th March general elections.
A spate of violence against Christians in Mosul ahead of the elections prompted an exodus of more than 3,500 faithful – up to half of the city’s Christian population – who fled mostly to villages in the nearby Nineveh plains. Many have since returned.
Archbishop Nona said the faithful now had “new hope”.
He went on: “The people clearly feel more confident after the elections. They have faith that things will now improve.”
The archbishop added: “The Easter celebrations went very, very well. I am really happy about the way it went and it was clear the people felt happy too. You had people coming to the church who had not come for two or three years.”
Archbishop Nona explained that security was high with armed men outside the four churches in Mosul where the Chaldean-rite Catholic services were held.
The Holy Week Triduum services went ahead as usual except that liturgies normally held in the evening including the Easter Vigil were brought forward to daylight hours to reduce the security risk.
But the archbishop said it was “too difficult” at this stage to say whether such hopeful reports would encourage a return of some of the thousands of Christians who fled Mosul in the years of anti-Christian violence and security breakdown following the fall of Saddam.
Since 2003, the Chaldean-rite Catholic community in Mosul has dwindled by two thirds.
Archbishop Nona’s account was one of a number of reports of peaceful Easter celebrations in Iraq.
It comes against a backdrop of violence in Baghdad where at least five people died and 140 were injured in six separate explosions.
Archbishop Louis Sako sent Aid to the Church in Need a message describing peaceful Easter celebrations in the northern city of Kirkuk.
In his account, reported by Catholic news agency, AsiaNews, the Archbishop of Kirkuk wrote that a delegation of local government officials and Muslim religious leaders attended the Catholic religious services in the city.
And in another sign of hope for the Church in Iraq, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, also known as the Chaldean Sisters, provided Easter packages for 750 poor families.
The families are among refugees currently living in villages outside the ancient Christian city of Zakho, close to the border with Syria and Turkey.
The food hampers, which included sugar, rice, chocolate and eggs, were funded by Aid to the Church in Need, which has helped to provide Easter and Christmas hampers for Christians in the region since 2008.
The food hamper project is coordinated by Father Bashar Warda, a senior Catholic priest.
Speaking from outside Erbil, the regional capital of Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq, Father Warda said that the initiative had once again been a great success.
He explained that, compared with last year, the number of items in each hamper was reduced to enable outreach to more families.
They face extreme poverty having fled their homes further south. Many are desperate to start a new life abroad.
Father Warda said: “The people were very happy to receive their hampers. The situation for them is very difficult and they are very grateful for the help they receive.”
The signs of new hope for Christians in Iraq will come as a major boost for Archbishop Nona, who at 42 became the Catholic Church’s youngest archbishop.
Ordained bishop in January, he replaced Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho of Mosul, who was kidnapped outside his cathedral in February 2008.
He died in captivity two weeks later and his body was buried in a shallow grave not far from the centre of the city.

Pasqua in Iraq: i cristiani invocano la pace per il Paese
Le violenze e gli attentati con morti e feriti di questi giorni, non hanno impedito ai cristiani iracheni di festeggiare la Pasqua. A Kirkuk una delegazione di funzionari governativi e leader musulmani locali hanno partecipato alla Veglia pasquale e alla Messa. Una testimonianza di solidarietà alla comunità cristiana, vittima nelle ultime settimane di una serie di attacchi mirati e costretti in migliaia alla fuga verso zone più sicure o all’estero. Mons. Louis Sako, arcivescovo di Kirkuk, riferisce ad AsiaNews che la chiesa era gremita e le donne hanno colorato migliaia di uova “per distribuirle ai fedeli e ai rappresentanti del governo”. Una famiglia musulmana ha preparato un enorme pane da distribuire ai presenti. Circa 500 bambini che frequentano le classi del catechismo, invece, hanno offerto i soldi risparmiati in Quaresima ai poveri della città, compresi i musulmani. “Il bambino che ha portato il denaro all’altare – sottolinea mons. Sako – ha detto che ‘con la preghiera’ si vince il male e il terrorismo”. Durante l’omelia l’arcivescovo di Kirkuk ha sottolineato che “la risurrezione di Cristo ci ricorda i valori del perdono, della riconciliazione, della pace e della vita”. Il sacrificio e l’amore di Gesù, ha aggiunto il prelato, sono “la magna charta per una vita umana dignitosa”. Egli ha inoltre spiegato che “l’emigrazione è un esilio; dobbiamo rimanere nella nostra terra e rendere testimonianza della nostra fede cristiana”. “Nella chiesa cristiana e nelle moschee – ha continuato mons. Sako – si impara l’amore, la tolleranza e la cooperazione, per essere più vicini a Dio”. Per questo gli iracheni, sulla base delle norme della legge e dei valori spirituali, devono “lavorare per la riconciliazione” e superare le divisioni, che sono “segni della morte: l’unità è il simbolo della vita”. In quest’ottica, secondo il prelato, sarà importante “la formazione del nuovo Parlamento e del nuovo governo, capaci di imporre l’ordine e garantire stabilità”.
